To not agree with school?

Have NC
Long story but dd changed school due to bullying.

The only suitable school we could find was a few miles away due to living in a village.
The school day is longer 9-4.10pm and so dd already has a long day but the buses into our village have changed which makes her day longer. She can get home at 6pm and goes out early.

When she started we were not told that she didn't have to chose a language at option level. They gave us a list of languages to chose from but because she had not done one language consistently at her old school the new school put her on a language new to her.

She's spent months really struggling, getting more frustrated and more upset with school telling her she can do it.

She has SEN including and I quote from the assessment 'deficiencies with understanding of written and spoken word.'
On Friday she got a list of forty words she had to identify certain categories from and learn. She got 5 right in the test today and is being retested again tomorrow before form when she will get detention if she doesn't get 12.

We've actually since found out some pupils have been allowed to chose a second humanity or business instead of a language which makes me very cross as she was doing well in humanities and as we are not almost a term into year ten it is too late to switch.

You need to arrange to speak to someone in the school asap.

Have you been into the school? Talked to senco or tutor?

I agree with pp
Speak to head of year ASAP. If she struggles with deficiencies with the written and spoken word in English then how is she going to cope with it in another language?
It’s not too late for her to change to another subject providing she’s prepared to work hard to catch up with what she’s missed.

I've talked to school on a couple of occasions about the language being an issue to no avail. Senco is new but have contacted now and I've just emailed the relevant people to ask for appointments and state my disappointment.

If she gets detention she will get home an hour later and already gets in at 6pm due to full buses and traffic and is classed in schools own words as vulnerable.

I've just had to explain irregular and regular verbs to her which she didn't understand in English but was expected to identify in German.

Were the business and humanities classes already full when your dd joined the school so they couldn't fit her in? I hope you get to speak to the Senco and they help you. The mfl sounds wrong for her and like she should drop it and it's unfair if she's trying and being given detention due to struggling with it.

So tell the school that if they impose this detention, she will not be attending it. What sort of education is this, punishing a child for not doing 'well enough' on a test? That's not good teaching and it will not get good results.

How did it go op?

No the businesses and humanities classes weren't full. I think the old head was probably encouraging them to have a language, possibly for the ebacc. I know the languages teacher told them they needed a language for university!

Anyway I spoke to Senco and spoke to head (small school) and dd spoke to the humanities teacher who is happy to have her so we are just waiting for the language teacher to come back from being ill so she can sign the form and dd can change.

I'm disappointed that they have let her struggle and be so stressed without telling us it was an option but at least it looks like it's sorted. Dd loves the humanities teacher he's amazing so I hope she can catch up now.

But the whole, point is that results are improved, surely?! Students need to actually learn stuff. You'd be amazed how many just don't get that.
