AIBU?

To be scared to go to the doctors?

I’m not well. At all- for the last week or two I’ve been exhausted- overwhelmingly so. Im sleeping up to 15 hours a day. Falling asleep in work. I’ve stopped driving. I’m not able to stay awake sometimes.

I’m not depressed. There is something physically causing this. But I am scared to go to the doctors. I think I have diabetes. I’m overweight. I drink too much, eat too much and do virtually no exercise. The tiredness is worse after eating.

But it’s about to be Christmas. And I feel like if I’m diagnosed with diabetes and have to then act upon that- it will ruin Christmas a bit. No alcohol or Christmas chocs. Not being able to go out for a Christmas meal. So would aibu to just carry on until after the festive period?

I love. Hristmas e8ne and chocolate etc as much as the next woman, but more than my health? No.
You won’t enjoy Christmas if you are so tired anyway. It’s already affecting your quality of life.
YANBU to be scared about a life changing diagnosis,
YABU not to go and find out.

That should say Christmas wine at the start. I haven’t been on it, honestly. My iPad hates me.

Yes you would be unreasonable. It’s only Christmas, your health is top priority. Make an appointment now.

Well, it might be diabetes, might be a virus, maybe iron deficiency or something completely different. You could start putting some lifestyle changes into place now? It seems counter-intuitive, but doing exercise gives me more energy. However, if there’s something medically wrong, surely you’re best off addressing it? Christmas is still a month away, you can still over-indulge if it’s that important to you. But I’d be asking myself whether it would be better to face up to it now, start dealing with it, or have a worried, totally knackered Christmas?

xmas is going to be really crap if you end up in hospital because you were worried you would have to drink less booze!

Look, I have to go and get a breast lump checked today. And I really don't want to. But I have to and so do you Flowers

Go to the GP and get the blood test.

You need to know. Xmas chocs do not trump the side effects of diabetes, and you're only going to worry until you know what's causing the tiredness.

I've only just being diagnosed as 'borderline' so really do understand how you feel.

Seriously? Get a bloody grip and make an appointment to see your GP.

You’ll be able to enjoy Christmas more if you’re not sleeping 15 hours a day. And unless you have other symptoms it is probably something else.

If its just for the last week or two, you may just have a virus? Felt similar myself last week, was taking to having naps in the afternoon but feel a lot more energetic today. However if diabetes is worrying you, you won't enjoy those christmas treats especially if they make you feel worse after. But it might not be that, could be a virus, low iron or anything, don't assume the worst. See your doctor!

I have a friend who recently had a similar episode, was convinced she was seriously ill, and adamant it was not depression. After months of spiralling procrastination, she eventually went to see her doctor. Everything it could have been, was quickly excluded, and lo and behold, she magically improved! She was obviously suffering from anxiety in some way, and just needed to break the cycle and reassure herself that all was in fact, quite well.

Come on woman..... Christmas will be a lot worse if you are worrying about what is wrong, drinking and eating chocolate which may or may not be making it worse. And if you are sleeping 15 hours a day, it won't be much fun either. If it is type 2 diabetes, this can be managed by diet.

Advise from a website I looked at: Because you can't change what happened in the past, focus on what you can do now and going forward. Simple changes at home can make a big difference, too.

Lose weight. Dropping just 7% to 10% of your weight can cut your risk of type 2 diabetes in half.

Get active. Moving muscles use insulin. Thirty minutes of brisk walking a day will cut your risk by almost a third.

Eat right. Avoid highly processed carbs, sugary drinks, and trans and saturated fats. Limit red and processed meats.

Please just make the appointment then go to the GP. It could be anything but you need to get it checked out. Forget about Christmas for now.

Yes it would be very unreasonable to wait. There could be so many causes of exhaustion this severe - I have ME and this describes me pretty well. Could be diabetes, a heart problem, hypothyroidism or something far worse. Could also be a virus or any number of benign things.

Your health is not something to gamble with - what if it's something serious? Fancy spending xmas in Hospital instead?

Go to the doctor!

Have a quick look at the Lovely Christmas Things thread and see how many of them you can recreate without eating/drinking. Bulk up your season without the things which might actually put you in hospital.

Best of luck.

get your arse to the doctor, now.

You can have fun without overeating and swilling. If it is diabetes, then stuffing up your health for good by ignoring it is not smart.

Or you could just die and ruin Christmas for everyone else. Harsh? People do not realise how serious diabetes can be and how life changing. It makes me so angry.

OP please please please go to your GP.

I was like this with an underactive thyroid. One tablet a day and I am now fine.

You need to put your health first. It doesn’t sound like you’re having much fun feeling how you do now so if you carry on feeling like this you are hardly going to enjoy your Christmas. Plus you will still be worrying about what it might be. Make yourself an appointment ASAP it might not be what you think.

OP - I have diabetes and it doesn't ruin Christmas. Ok I can't sit there and eat a whole tub of roses in one sitting, but no one should be doing that anyway.

Go to the Drs, have a blood test and find out for sure, you're better off finding out what the problem is so that you can get on with your life feeling much better asap.

Ring the Drs and say you need an appointment as soon as possible.

It could be your thyroid gland OP, a simple blood test will determine if this is the case. You really need to pull up your big girl pants, and make that call. If you do have an under active thyroid gland, and choose to ignore it, not only will you be falling asleep, but your mental health will begin to suffer. Ring now, and let us know how you get on.
