Can you give a more valid link than The Express? I’m not giving that rag clicks.

My cat could bring in the same if his mother were Queen Cat. Has nothing to do with who they are and only to do what who they were born to. Sick of paying for that lot, especially the new ones. Shouldn't have to pay for royal protection for Harry's girlfriend, either. YAB ridiculous.

No I won’t be “thankful”Hmm. We’ve moved past the times when the public diff their caps and grovel for the Royal Family.

Thanks to Express readers £2bn is worth about £8.

What a load of horseshit.

The Queen doesn't do hourly magic tricks and acrobatics on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to entertain tourists. No royal palace is in the top ten UK visitor attractions. Windsor Castle isn't even the top attraction in Windsor. Get rid of the lot of them, open the doors of the ex royal residences to the paying public and see those coffers swell. People will pay a fortune to see where the Queen went to the toilet slept.

Quite apart from the fact that this whole load of medieval bullshit is anathema in the modern world - and an expensive one, which we all pay for, whether we want to or not - the communities who desperately need financial support don't see a penny of this mythical income the RF supposedly generate. The people queueing at my local food bank, the Sure Start centres which have closed, the chap who sleeps in the doorway of my local (closed due to cuts) police station - they're not benefitting. To have a woman be granted millions to update her palace when we can't - apparently - afford to fit sprinklers in tower blocks, to see disabled people killing themselves because of benefit cuts, to see those food bank queues swell and austerity bite while one family lives in luxury at our expense - it's beyond obscene.

So YABVU OP.

I’d be embarressed to let on that I read the Express, and believed the shite it spouts!

Sorry I disagree, I thought it was quite disgusting that the queen was recently given a pay rise but ended up having millions in off shore investments.

How many millions did the public pay for those useless scroungers, Kate and Will for their Kensington palace apartments?

Report
PiffleandWiffle · 20/11/2017 08:21

taking the palaces and turning them into luxury hotels and conference centres where people from all over the world would pay big bucks to sleep in the queens bed.

But that wouldn't generate more money for the country would it?

It'd generate more money for the Oligarch or Saudi Prince that could afford to buy them, get them modernised & then hire them out to other Oligarchs & Princes, whilst the common hoi-polloi get to change their sheets & fold bog roll for the same wages as when Liz & Phil employed them......

Exactly piffle. The percentage of major buildings in london that aren't owned by the British is huge. sell Buckingham palace and you'd get a one off lump sum, which would disappear in no time, and another playground for a Saudi royal/Qatari oil magnate. Nobody would come to see it, tourism would drop, restaurants and shops and hotels in the area would all suffer, britain's profile as a tourist destination would suffer - it would be bonkers.

After Grenfell there was a piece on BBC news about William and Kate visiting the emergency aid centre (set up by the community, incidentally, because the authorities were fucking useless). There was a woman early audible in the background wailing in grief/desperation. The sycophantic toad of a reporter described them in reverential tones as 'William and Catherine, also Kensington residents'.

Fuck. Off.

Britain’s profile as a tourist destination Hmm

Tourists come here for a variety of reasons and seeing BP is only one of them.

Apparently female prostitution earns the UK £5 billion a year www.ons.gov.uk/economy/nationalaccounts/satelliteaccounts/timeseries/mnc8/bb, so by OP's logic we should be 2.5 times more thankful that vulnerable women are forced sell their bodies than the existence of the royal family.

I'd much rather we had neither.

I hardly think that a country with both the National Trust and Historic England would let Buck House be sold off to a Saudi in the event of a republic (though, in fairness, it's the worst palace Smile).

Apparently they belong to us, however you try ticking up to the gate a demanding to be let in toy ‘your’ property! I asked the dude at holyrood palace why I should buy an extortionate ticket to get into something I paid for. He couldn’t quite answer me.
