Pissed off at a random photographer

Earlier today my DP was parking his car when a woman walked over to him and told him that she had taken a picture of his car bonnet (Not sure when said pic was taken)

The car had been in a accident when owned by previous owner and so the paint work on the bonnet has a "speckled" effect on it.
The woman said she liked the way the "speckled" effect looked in the light so she took a picture (bonnet only) and sold it for £400 on a photography website.
I've been pissed off about this ever since.

Why would you be pissed off?

I don't get why she had to tell my DP how much she earned from the picture as she didn't bother to ask if she could take the picture in the first place.

It's just annoyed me

I don't get it either.

Cross post. You don't have to have permission to take a picture in public, do you?

Report
Nicknacky · 20/11/2017 00:15

Well, she probably thought it was a sort of compliment. Why has it annoyed you so much?

Report
steff13 · 20/11/2017 00:16

Maybe she thought he'd get a kick out of knowing that the bonnet (that's the hood, right?) of his car was in a photo contest.

@Nicknacky I can't say 100% why it has annoyed me so much. I think it's mainly because she mentioned the money she had earned. We don't know her so why bother coming over to tell DP in the first place!

Like I said, she probably thought he would be chuffed that it was so special.

You're annoyed because your OH has a crapsmobile which someone else randomly made a chunk of money from and you think telling him that lacked tact? Is that it?

Report
Battleax · 20/11/2017 00:18

Yes the hood steff Smile

Is it possible she was fibbing about the amount of money? I imagine it's actually pretty hard for amateur photographers to sell a picture for £400. Or is she a known, established professional?

@Battleax I guess so yes

Why, do you think the money should have been yours?

It’s weird though

If she was going to track him down, she could at least made him a print or given him the link. Or her card. Or something.

@Battleax I guess so yes

I've driven some real heaps of scrap metal in my time so I think I'm empathising quite strongly Smile

Artistic types don't think like the rest of us. (I'm married to one.) She probably did think it was a nice thing to share.

@Refusethelies I have No idea who she is but £400 does sound quite a bit for what it is.

She might have taken the picture before the previous owner sold it. I can't see why asking is such an issue anyway. Could have been parked at the time. You don't need permission to photograph a car, or even its owner.

She probably thought you'd be interested that an arty photo of your car was on a photography website. Silly her.

@IslingtonLou I thought it was weird but it's enterprising I guess.
Just to randomly go over and tell the person how much you made. It was just that which bothered me

My DP has had the car for a few years so the car now has nothing to do with the previous owner.
She just randomly walked up to DP told him she had taken a picture and made £400 from it. She didn't mention the site or anything

Well she may have been chuffed that she got such a decent amount for the photo, and wanted to share it with the car owner - as I assume that she saw the same car again by complete chance and was excited to see his response. Isn’t it weird to think that someone, somewhere, has the photo of his bonnet up in their house??

More MN weirdness Hmm

Well, heck, take a few photos yourself of the bonnet and see how much you can flog them for?!

@HelenUrth That's true but maybe she has the copyright for the picture now that she sold it
