To complain to the charity shop ladies

We have a charity shop in our village. Run completely by volunteers and all monies go back into village groups so I'm always happy to donate.

What has annoyed me now is that I donated a beautiful babies Moses basket, complete with clean drapes and bedding. I drove past Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and the basket was outside the shop on the pavement, presumably because they haven't got the room to store slightly larger items. There are other small items of furniture outside too, small chairs, bedside cabinets etc as the shop itself is crammed full of brick a brac, glassware and clothes.

I was so annoyed , the lovely Moses basket outside on the pavement, right next to a busy road probably getting car dirt, fumes, damp etc (it still had the cotton covers on it) and I thought how rude, I could have sold it but thought it would be better to donate it. No one will want to buy it now after being left outside. There can't be any common sense surely - am I being precious or should I go and get it back?

No. That's awful. They should have told you when you donated it that they had no space. It's offensive actually to just leave it outside. People often donate items from deceased family members so to see their family members beloved item left in the rain rather than being put to good use could cause serious distress. Definitely complain

I can understand why you are annoyed - putting a moses basket out in th elements is quite daft.

But as a general principle I think that if you give something away, it is no longer yours and the recipient can basically do whatever they like with it.

(Having said that you could maybe pop in and casually say 'won't the Moses basket get ruined stood outside like that ?')

I'm surprised they let you donate it- they were on the "can't accept for H&S reasons" when I was a volunteer.
Bit silly of them to leave it out though. Wrecks a lovely item and will lower the resale value for them.

I would be angry too,.
Unfortunately though, once you hand something over, it's no longer yours.
It's theirs, to do with as they see fit.
It's like when you sell your house and the new owners rip everything out of the garden (that you've lovingly planted and tended over the years) and grass it over.
It's upsetting. But it's not yours any more. Sad

that's very rude and unhygienic ... seriously unhygienic... WTF Hmm are they seriously expecting someone to purchase it off the ground outside the shop ??

I would have to say something if nothing else for the reason that it would put me- and potentially others - off donating.
But I am a mouthy Yorkshire woman so keeping my mouth shut is nigh on impossible!
