To take my handbag to bed with me

I don't like leaving my handbag with purse and car keys downstairs. I take it to my bedroom and keep it overnight by the side of my bed. This just seem common sense to me as if we were burgled they would be safer next to me.

Partner thinks this is ridiculous and takes the piss 'sure you don't want to take the TV to bed with you?' and other hilarious lines Hmm

Am I abnormal?

I always keep my handbag by the bed at night :)

NickMyLipple · 18/11/2017 22:43

DP takes his keys to bed. I leave mine on the stairs. My car is replaceable and I've got insurance. I'd hate to wake up to a burglar with a gun against my head demanding my car keys.

Primamadonna · 18/11/2017 22:43

OP, my handbag always comes upstairs with me too ! I think it's rather sensible...hope it's not regarded as mad Confused

JT05 · 18/11/2017 22:43

Me too.

PickAChew · 18/11/2017 22:43

The only problem would be if someone came looking for your car keys because they wanted your car.

I only took my handbag to bed with me when I was working on leaving my abusive ex.

Ropsleybunny · 18/11/2017 22:44

I always take my bag with me when I go to bed. Keys, phone, purse everything is in there, why wouldn’t I? Tell your DP to mind his own fucking business.

PickAChew · 18/11/2017 22:44

I do keep my house keys on my bedside, mind - basic fire escape stuff.

Only1scoop · 18/11/2017 22:44

No way I leave purse, car keys etc by the front door. If they want to burgle me they can take the lot. Don’t want them coming up the stairs thanks very much

JeReviens · 18/11/2017 22:44

Do you really want to give your so far hypothetical burglar a reason to search the house for bags, purses etc?
Just leave your bag where it is and put your energy into securing your property instead.
I've been burgled. If they try it again they'll have to get in and get past 3 large dogs. If they can do that without waking me they're welcome to my ten pounds and a Nectar card.

Bitsandbobsalot · 18/11/2017 22:44

I would rather a burglar find my car keys and purse easily and leave than come looking for them in my bedroom and god knows what happen to me and my family so I kinda agree with your oh. Money, cars and bank cards can be easily replaced you my dear can’t.

Incitatus · 18/11/2017 22:45

When I cared for elderly people, the ladies would always take their handbags to bed with them. Mostly full of tissues and half sucked mints, but it was important to them to have the bag there overnight.

AdoraBell · 18/11/2017 22:45

Not admiral, especially re keys. I tend to keep my keys in jeans pocket, on the floor at the end of the bed. Call me a slob if you like, but that’s me 😁

StickThatInYourPipe · 18/11/2017 22:47

I leave everything downstairs, I would rather them be found and the people leave. I don’t want them coming in my room

nancy75 · 18/11/2017 22:47

My parents were victims of a home invasion style burglary, it was worse than horrific.
If someone breaks into your house would you rather they took the car & left or came into your bedroom looking for your bag & keys while you are asleep in bed?
I leave my bag & car keys at the bottom of the stairs.

Primamadonna · 18/11/2017 22:47

I really like my handbags though. I would gladly leave car keys downstairs.

BusterGonad · 18/11/2017 22:48

I leave my keys in the door so if there's a fire we won't have to rummage for the house keys in the dark and getting burnt to death in the process!

FitBitFanClub · 18/11/2017 22:49

if we were burgled they would be safer next to me.

How's that, then? You reckon that a burglar who's gone to the effort of breaking into your house and wants to steal your car is going to be put off by the fact the keys are by the bed of a half-asleep, disorientated woman?

Escapepeas · 18/11/2017 22:49

We were burgled specifically for DH’s car keys and the burglars had been spotted scoping the car and the house out beforehand. DH had hidden the keys which meant the burglars searched the house for them and stole a load of other stuff which they wouldn’t have found if the keys had just been downstairs and easy to find.

We are super conscious about security but even DH leaves the car keys downstairs now.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/11/2017 22:51

I leave my handbag and all the keys downstairs and take my Rottweiler to bed. No point leaving him to guard things he'd be rubbish.

notangelinajolie · 18/11/2017 22:51

Car keys near the door. Would rather let the bastards find them and leave.

BusterGonad · 18/11/2017 22:52

Where I live there are so many big expensive houses with expensive cars on the drive, I do not ever worry about being burgled.

mummyhaschangedhername · 18/11/2017 22:52

I’ve been burgled recently. I wasn’t at home, frankly personal safety before any material belongings. It’s been devastating, but I would rather them take my stuff and leave me and my family alone. Increase security instead.

I agree with Only1Scoop - I'd rather the burglars stole something insured and replaceable and left as quickly as possible - I don't want to encourage them upstairs where they might attack me or mistake my sentimental-value-only jewellery for something of financial worth.

NapQueen · 18/11/2017 22:53

Burglars would have a hard job finding my hand bag as I have no clue where I put it. And I only came home an hour ago. No way would I be organised enough to bring it to bed with me.

Twofurrycats · 18/11/2017 22:54

I leave it downstairs. I don't have a high performance, high value car that would interest most car thieves and I'm on a terrace so it isn't particularly obvious which car is who's. House keys never left in doors or near but in a logical place in case of fire.
