AIBU?

To feel sorry for a cockroach?

We watched the Chester Zoo programme where Carl the Cockroach (yes they named him!) had been turned into a zombie. I never thought I would feel sorry for a cockroach, but I did. Poor Carl, and all because he was the prettiest cockroach there.

I surprised myself recently and I stroked a Madagascan hissing cockroach at a petting zoo. I quite liked the horrible little beastie in the end.

LaurieFairyCake Another insect injected him with poison to keep his body alive, but take away independent thought. And then laid her eggs on Carl. The eggs hatch and eat Carl as their first meal.

My lizards have just eaten five between them, it's their favourite thing in the whole world! (Dubia roaches)

SadSadSad

Why has someone done that to Carl?

Was it encouraged ?!?!?

Why did no one stop it ?????

Oh my god, are you me??
I recorded that (series link) and watched it tonight and the girl talking about it was so... meh, it's a cockroach, whatever (!)
You fucking named it carl! It's got a name! If they'd matter of factly referred to it as the host then I could have maybe dealt with it a bit better, but to give it a name then go into detail about how its death would be so gruesome..! No!

Baby rhino was adorable though

I saw this - it was pretty horrid, and yes I did feel sorry for carl the cockroach. Being slowly eaten alive is a nasty way for any living creature to go. Wasps are bastards aren't they. I saw another programme last year about painted lady butterflies hatching in Africa (prior to flying over here) and wasps kill about 75% of them. Horrible little bastards.

The egg laying wasp stings it so it is still alive but unable to barely move, so it can provide the wasps first meal when it hatches.
It literally starts with the less important organs then goes onto the more vital ones because it likes its meal fresh!
I've never felt sorry for a roach before, but flipping hell thats a horrible way to die.

You are not alone.

Wasps as a species struggle for redeeming features but managed to give a cockroach one!

Glad I wasn't the only one to feel sorry for Carl. I hate cockroaches as well.

I’m all for the protection of bee’s.... but what to wasps bring to the table? Who benefits from the wasp?

I watched this programme with DD because of the baby rhino. Was not aware of the Carl murder scene until it was too late: “So she’s paralysed him with her venom and now she’s chewing off his antennae!” said brightly while we watched in horror. It got worse after that. Shock

if you feel sorry for Carl, how'd you feel about Andy the ant who ends up with a toadstool growing out of his head?

Wasps are fuckers. What are they actually even for? They don’t even eat flies! All they’re good for is spoiling picnics. Pointless, stinging, cockroach murdering bastards.

Ifailed that is awful!! Sad poor ants, Ive always been abit fascinated by ants, Amazing little workers but just the thought of one of them toddling off knowing they we're going to die, or the colony carrying you to basically your death bed Sad

FWIW I hate wasps also, not particularly a fan of cockcroaches but that's a nasty way to die, poor Carl!

I can't believe how upsetting this thread has been first thing in the morning before Ive even had my coffee Grin

What are they actually even for?

Wasps are great insect predictors, without them our gardens and fields would be over-run with 'pests', eating our crops and food, some also act as plant pollinators.

I felt sorry for carl too! I think it would of been better if they didnt personalise him. As soon as they named him i imagined a wife, kids and a little cockroachy mortgage Sad

Nature is a real bastard. I can't watch watch wildlife programs at all. They're worse than Disney.
