AIBU?

To think getting quite drunk with a baby is odd??

NC as could be outing.

So we are suppose to be visiting friends this weekend. They have a 6 month old we have a toddler. They want to go out for dinner and drink then go back to theirs and pop open the champagne. Apparently they have quite a few bottles. My DP friend then said he's going to guzzle the wine and his wife will be drinking too.

Obviously most of the drinking will be when the kids are in bed but AIBU to think you wouldn't do this?? What if something happened like an emergency and you needed to go out or the baby needed something. I wouldn't want to get really drunk while caring for my D'S.

I'm all for having fun and a laugh but a glass or 2 not 3 bottles of champagne and guzzling wine!

AIBU or would other people do this?

Nothing will happen to the babies. If it did, there are taxis, neighbours, friends to help rush them to hospital. But nothing will happen.

YABU.

Anyway you aren't drinking, so they can rely on you.

What about people who don’t drive or have cars? What do they do?

Report
Nicknacky · 16/11/2017 12:20

Are they planning on getting blootered or just having a few drinks? (which is what it sounds like)

Because surely he isn't planning on drinks 3 bottles of champagne to himself?

People drink at home all the time?

Report
dantdmistedious · 16/11/2017 12:21

I don’t see the problem - sounds like a few drinks not drinking three bottles of champagne each

Wouldn't bother me. A few glasses and I'd be able to take a child in a taxi if needed. I don't like driving even when I've had one (under the limit) so I'd have to get a taxi anyway.

I don't get it either op. I still feel "on duty" when my dd is asleep in bed, so would not get drunk. I need to know that in an emergency I would be able to think clearly and make the right decisions. Sure the chances are nothing would happen, but it's not worth the risk to me. Two glasses of wine is my limit, anything more than that and I'm drunk, not tipsy. I rarely drink anyway.

Oh stop it. If you don't want to, don't, but stop judging others. Are you going to be entirely sober for the next 20 years? There is nothing remotely wrong with getting sloshed with kids around.

and from extensive experience I can tell you that when there is an emergency, you sober up very fast. But there won't be.

FGS of course it's not odd, it's normal.
Why use the word 'guzzling' here anyway? Surely they will just be drinking?

Smarshian · 16/11/2017 12:24

YABU. I don't see an issue sharing a few bottles between you if kids are in bed.

YABU. Sometimes parents want to relax. He’s probably not planning on being smashed and incapable, just a bit drunk!

Appuskidu · 16/11/2017 12:26

Doesn’t bother me at all. If it bothers you so much-stay sober.

are they really both planning on drinking until they pass out? That is a bit much - but I see nothing wrong with drinking 4-5 glasses of wine once in a while to get drunk - you can always call a taxi in the likely event something's wrong.

drinking til you can't stand up isn't something most grown ups do on a regular basis but it sounds to me as though the DH will get trashed and the mum will have a few and then be fine to react should anything occur.

Gosh, if I could only ever have 1 or 2 glasses once a parent I'd never have had the blighters!

It's bloody awful OP. Not odd.

And as for this comment

there are taxis, neighbours, friends to help rush them to hospital. But nothing will happen.

The baby isn't the responsibility of the neighbours!

Or the friends.

if something bad did happen or if the baby was ill, then judgement will be impaired.

I HATE the normalisation of people getting pissed in charge of children.

H/ave a drink, Mrs, and chill.

Stopfuckingshouting So? Doesn't mean it's ok or worthy of a Confused face!

What's confusing you exactly?

That OP has a perfectly valid concern about parents of a small baby getting pissed whilst in charge of that baby?

TBH I don't think it's normal, and I appear in the minority. One of us is always able to drive here in case of something happening.

I worked in A&E for a while having seen parents who aren't in a state to look after children or understand what's being said to them, and I don't want to be one of them.

Of course it's unreasonable to get drunk with a baby, everyone knows babies can't hold their alcohol. To get drunk while caring for a baby is also unreasonable, I think. Drinking is fine but getting 'drunk'so your judgement is impaired is unnecessary and irresponsible IMO.

no i reckon the op's misinterpreted one parent aiming to get bladdered when there's no evidence that the other parent will do more than have a couple of drinks - 'she'll be drinking too' doesn't imply that the DW is going to do the same.

The idea that one parent has to remain stone cold sober all the time is bloody silly. I am perfectly capable of booking a taxi and assessing a critical situation after half a bottle of wine.

He used the word guzzling and my DP knows him well and he's planning on getting very drunk! Not so sure on his wife getting as drunk but she's drinking too. I wouldn't mind if they were say 4/5 because they are more independent. But a 6 month old and young toddler I just wouldn't feel comfortable. He also gets lairy and very loud when drunk. Numerous times we have had to reign him in when we have been out. I just feel this particular night will be a bit of a disaster. We are suppose to be staying too. Another thing is he also likes smoking marijuana and wants to when we are there. Which I'm really not happy about too!

If you don't like his company then don't go? And there is nothing wrong with him getting drunk (although using the word guzzling, really)

Different issue if both are getting so wrecked that neither are fit and capable.

Getting absolutely trollied, being loud & lairy plus the potential for pot being whipped out = fuck that. YANBU

But your opening post reads like youre suggesting it’s U to have more than say the drink drive limit when children are in the house. No it’s not U, but getting shitfaced is. There’s a huge difference.

Don't be so boring, what are you supposed to be on alert and able to whip a child to a&e for the rest of their childhood til they go to uni??!! What a load! If you don't want to drink don't but don't judge your friends for wanting to let their hair down
