AIBU?

To want to rip my fucking throat out?

I've got the stupid lurgy thing going round. I'm not usually such a wuss but the sore throat is genuine agony. I'm almost crying. I've taken codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen and I'm sucking strepsils like they are going out of fashion. Yet I'm still waking up with every swallow. I just need some fucking sleep.

Honestly, if someone offered to take me out with a shot gun, at the moment I might accept.

Difflam spray is good if you can get it. Loads of warm drinks or ice lollies too, avoid anything citrus

Thanks, I'll try and find some in the morning.

And lots of empathy. I used to get tonsillitis all the time, once was so bad my mum drove me to the doctors as hallucinating with the temperature. The doctor looked in my throat with visible horror Grin

I had strep throat recently- I feel for you. Couldn’t swallow any kind of painkiller, not even sips soluble in water. Just felt my throat had closed up.

Ended up taking strong suppository painkillers for a week, plus getting pumped full of steroids and antibiotics.

Interesting when I’ve told (not many!) friends & family about my treatment how many make a face and state categorically ‘oh I could never put a medication up my bum, it’d be too uncomfortable and gross!’.

Then sorry, you have never had proper pain. I’ll remember that next time you tell me you’ve got ‘the flu’ or a ‘sore throat like Skittles had’ or ‘a migraine’ that you’re a right hypochondriac.

If someone had offered me pain relief that involved shooting off a toe, I’d have probably given it a go. Let alone a meagre suppository!

Get help tomorrow, OP, there are solutions out there (for both ends of you!). You have my sympathy.

Same here OP Sad It’s been this bad since Sunday evening and I would give anything to be able to sleep and feel better. It’s like my tonsils have been taken out with a spoon. Thanks for Difflam spray & beechams tip, will try to get some tomorrow.

I would happily put something up my bottom right now if it meant I could go to sleep! Not sure strepsils would work though Grin

It sounds a bit weird but a friend recommended marshmallows last time I had a sore throat.

It did actually help a bit (presumably something to do with being soft and soothing)

Chloraseptic throat spray completely numbs the back of your throat. Amazing stuff and available at the chemist.

Long history of throat problems here. Gargling with soluble aspirin is ace at numbing the pain for a while. But see your GP as you may need antibiotics. Best of luck.

Sorry, OP, that sounds yuck, hope you manage to get sorted. And Skittles, that was an hilarious post.

Any throat spray with local anaesthetic. I don’t even bother with cough sweets and all that stuff as it’s not going to stop a seriously painful throat. Spraying the actual area that’s hurting will instantly numb it and you can finally get some relief!

Id happily shove all manner of stuff up my bum right now. I'm pretty desperate!

A large hot whisky toddy should numb the pain and make you sleepy

I think you know you are desperate when suppositories sound entirety reasonable!

I've got ulcers at the moment. No proper solid food for almost a week. I'd give pretty much anything to get rid of them.

Agree that, over the counter, a numbing throat spray and soluble aspirin up to 600mg x 4 a day but spit if it upsets your tummy, otherwise swallow some of it.

And keep on top of your painkillers. Get yourself to the GP if you can't swallow them.

Ugh I used to get throats like that before my DCs. Now it’s laryngitis and I’m currently in a bout.

When I used to get ulcerated throat, my god, it’s horrendous. I always found gargling TCP was the best. Once I was so desperate I gargled it neat!

Also warm salted water.

I would think tea tree diluted would be good too.

Hope you all feel better soon.

Oh I feel you. Standard lozenges don't touch the sides when it's like that. Look for the hardcore sprays that numb your throat completely.

Also only thing that ever worked for me was.... whisky. Trick my dad taught me when i was 13 and desperate! Last time I had something similar I got a double neat whisky and sipped slowly. Had a lovely soothing effect but also the alcohol made something in my throat pop! The utter relief! Acts as an antiseptic I suppose and 'draws it'. Could also try a brown listerine gargle but gargling hurt!

If you can't face that then endless cups of the juice of a whole lemon, hot hot water, ginger and loads of honey. Again nice and soothing in sips. Shove some whisky in that too. Grin

I have really suffered with bad throat infections.

Gargling with dissolved.asprin helps. The Dr told means hot as you can take it is best.

The spray is good but can make you sick.

Also Ice pops and lollies. I have been known to nearly choke myself trying to hold a lolly on the ulcers at the back of my throat.

You really have my sympathies. It is so miserable the thought of it fills me with fear.

I’m just recovering from this at the moment and feel your pain. I’ve been doubling up paracetamol and ibuprofen and using difflam spray. I went to the Drs and they gave me penicillin which has really helped. I didn’t sleep at all for two nights and was beside myself. Night nurse is also amazing at knocking me out so I can sleep.

Tyrozets have a really small amount of antibiotic and an anaesthetic too, they’re available over the counter at the chemist and were a godsend when I had a horrible sore throat. Flowers
