Do they not realise that schools do "allow" any child to wear a superhero outfit or a princess dress?

Do you realise that many schools are academies and many of them are church schools. Just sayin' like. In case you don't understand the academy system, where they make their own rules?

BTW no child of mine ever went to a school where a superhero outfit was part of the uniform.

Don't think they're meaning for uniform but for role play.

Academies can't make their own rules entirely as they still get inspected by OFSTED.

I vaguely heard this on the radio this morning. Didn't realise it was a transgender issue - if a boy wears a dress I just thought that mean he wanted to wear a dress

Is this based on something or just randomly chucking it out there?

CofE schools are about 25% of schools, so yes there is an audience.

And it is the sort of stuff that one would hope wouldn't need saying. But they have policy documents on this sort of thing (this is an update, isn't it, not a completely new thing) and I think the message is right. And if there are any schools - or parents/communities - which have different expectations, having a properly laid out policy makes it easier to counter bullying and bigotry in any form.

And it's put it in the news, which I don't think is a bad thing, when the key message (in the coverage I've seen so far) is the tutus, tiaras and toolbelts are OK for children. All children.

I really am not in the mood to explain the finer points of academy control this morning, which include uniform interpretation, unqualified teachers, financial incompetence and much much more!

No, we don't change the clothes to suit the preference of the child. We change the child, hormone blockers, hormones, surgery.

Is it this you’re taking about, OP? It’s dorm Metro and came up on my news feed this morning. In the first sentence they’re confusing gender with sex, so I would take it with a pinch of salt:

Church advises schools: Let kids choose their gender
CHILDREN should be allowed to decide what sex they are without judgment or derision from teachers, the Church of England has said.
Nursery and primary school pupils in particular must be free to discover the ‘possibilities of who they might be’, says the organisation’s first guidance on transphobic bullying.
‘A child may choose the tutu, the princess’s tiara and heels and/or the fireman’s helmet, tool belt and superhero cloak without expectation or comment,’ teachers at 4,700 schools have been advised.
But some critics warned that the guidance — with a foreword by the archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby — would create a ‘climate of fear’.
‘Any expression of dissent in any way or a slip of the tongue you become labelled hateful, and that’s not Christian,’ said Andrea Williams, of the Christian Law Centre. ‘We’re all against bullying but, in framing the debate as they do, they are in danger of becoming the bullies.’
The archbishop tells teachers: ‘We must avoid, at all costs, diminishing the dignity of any individual to a stereotype or a problem.’ The guidance adds: ‘It may be best to avoid labels and assumptions which deem children’s behaviour irregular, abnormal or problematic just because it does not conform to gender stereotypes or today’s play preferences.’
The advice, which also tackles biphobic bullying, comes three years after the church first issued guidelines on homophobic bullying.
LGBT rights group Stonewall said Mr Welby should be congratulated for sending a ‘clear signal’.
But Christian groups said school staff already risked losing their jobs for ‘misgendering’ children.
Ms Williams said the ‘tragic’ church advice was buying into the Stonewall agenda which ‘isn’t tolerant at all’.
Maths teacher Joshua Sutcliffe, 27, faces disciplinary action for calling a transgender pupil at his Oxfordshire school a girl when she identifies as a boy. The part-time pastor said it was a slip of the tongue.

I don't think any explanation is needed.

CofE schools may or may not be academy, VA or VC, each with their own degree of control (via governors) from the the Church. They will all be urged to read and take note of church educational policies, and it is really quite unlikely that any would depart significantly from them.

Especially ones which are saying absolutely 'motherhood and Apple pie' things about not tolerating bullying and letting children be children.

(oh bloody hell, that means the next school governor meeting I have to minute will be about twice the length as they all go on and on and on about this...)
