Topical I know. Someone just shared a clip on fb and it made me feel quite depressed, hyacinth was clearly insecure and her husband was such a pathetic disloyal old drip. And yeah the neighbour was a knob, and don’t get me started on her loser nephew.

When I watched it at 16 I was like HAHA YEAH LOL AT HYACINTH but now I want to give her a hug.

Maybe you need to share the clip here. It's been a while!

Nephew? I don't remember there ever being a nephew in the show.

Wasn't she the fluttery, nervous one who dropped cups? Lived with her brother?

You mean her brother, and why was she a knob?

Her nephew? Emmett was her brother not her nephew.

And for all that she claimed to be ashamed of them, Hyacinth always went to her family's aid when they needed it.

Yes, Emmett was Elizabeth's brother, not nephew. I only ever felt sorry for them both having to put up with Hyacinth tbh!

Do you mean Emmet? He was the neighbours brother

richard rolling his eyes behind Hyacinths back used to irritate me

I hate hyacinth. But not as much as Richard.
Why did he marry her? He chose her! It wasn't an arranged marriage ffs! Poor woman. Insecure, a bit of a twat and not even her husband liked her.
The neighbours- well. Yes they were weird. But their reaction was valid- you don't choose your neighbours do you? And many of us hate ours

Pfft. Not seen for ages, but Hyacinth was a total, utter snob! The way she used to look down on her sister Daisy and BIL Onslow.
Hide when she saw them coming, or pretend she didn't know them etc.
As for her NDN, I'd be a wreck living next door to her and forever being asked to come for a cup of tea with her best china out, or Emmet (NDN's brother, not nephew) not daring to come out of his front door without Hyacinth appearing from behind a bush and singing at him!
Richard was a drip, though. He should have manned up and told her to get a grip and stop being such a bloody snob. Grin

Remember when Richard kissed the neighbour (woman) in the Christmas special? What an arsehole! LTB!

I wish they’d bring it back.

Would love to know who her son Sheridan is.

I understood it as she was a wannabe posh, and everything she did was thwarted, and made her look silly. It was a losing battle as her family kept turning up keeping her in her toes.
Her dh Richard was a wet blanket in cahoots with the neighbour, which was naff, but probably kept them sane against Hyacinths agenda.

What a great programme. Wish it was on Netflix!

The new captain on Swashbuckle reminds me of Hyacinth with the way she speaks.

Iirc, in the beginning the NDN had a husband who worked abroad? Then the brother came to live with her and the husband was never mentioned again?

We never did see what went on at her Candlelit suppers, did we? Did anyone watch that prequel fairly recently about Hyacinth as a young girl?

I was just thinking of her nephew as Dominic Monaghan from Lord of the Rings and Lost..but he plays her nephew (?) in Hetty Wainthrop

I did! Thought it was good to see them all as they were younger.
Good casting, as you could totally see who was supposed to be which sister. Smile
You even got to see Violet, as usually you only ever heard of her when she rung up Hyacinth and she'd yell out to whoever was or most likely wasn't listening as they didn't care
"It's my sister, Violet! You remember my sister Violet? The one with room for a pony..." Grin

Yes Pumpkinsquash! Glad someone else saw it. Found myself missing Patricia Routledge though (which would have been impossible to have her in the prequel) but she really makes the program as she's so good!

I didn't like the comedies of that era (that one and one foot in the grave) because they weren't laughing at a situation, like say the Good life. They were laughing at a person.
I just ended up feeling sorry for them.

Although I think the lowest point they reached was the Christmas Special for OFITG when the joke seemed to be that a friend was staying who was contemplating suicide Hmm How anyone can think that's suitable for a comedy ever, but especially at Christmas, is totally beyond me.

Remember comedies that used to say "You have been watching..." on the end credits and have a little sequence of the characters having a little jaunty wave to camera or something like that. They used to depress me a bit as they were always on a Sunday night and when they finished it meant bed, then school Sad
