To hate the soppy Christmas ads (I see you, John Lewis) and how they take a classic song and destroy it

I hate all those wet, faux sentimental Christmas ads with a purple passion. I particularly hate how they take a classic song and turn it into something that sounds like it is being sung by a dying dog..that needs a wee..and a poo. Don't get me wrong I looove Christmas but those!

Tobebythesea Fri 10-Nov-17 12:18:06

I hate it too.

Jojoanna Fri 10-Nov-17 12:19:39

Oh god 🙄 Totally agree

FluffyMcCloud Fri 10-Nov-17 12:21:38

Ugh. They are the worst.

I have struggled to understand the hype about these showy ads over the last few years. What is the point?!

Squeee Fri 10-Nov-17 12:27:37

I make it a point to avoid them. Made it all the way till just before Christmas when I was deep in thought and accidentally watched the John Lewis atrocity.

scortja Fri 10-Nov-17 12:29:53

I hate all the 'the john lewis ad is out today! the john lewis ad is out today!'

Fuck sake - its a fucking ad - grow up.

alphajuliet123 Fri 10-Nov-17 12:31:09

Oh thank god it's not just me, I hate them too....if you try and make me cry I aint shopping with you!

(haven't seen any of them yet this year!)

haveacupoftea Fri 10-Nov-17 12:32:17

I hope it's less depressing than the one with the sad old man on the moon

carb0nated Fri 10-Nov-17 12:35:14

My respect for John Lewis has diminished ever since they started with those pathetic adverts.

I've just been watching Al Jazeera news about Lebanon and also the Rohinga people of Burma. What a lot of good John Lewis could have done with that money instead.

RoseWhiteTips Fri 10-Nov-17 12:39:34

Dreadful and mawkish.

Head shoulders knees and toes

YANBU. I quite enjoyed the Tesco advert as I think some of the "tense" moments are quite realistic.

But, JL adverts are shit.

I really hate this trend for slowed down songs sung in some weird cockney-esque accent by a woman with a creepy breathy voice.

No, gimme a bit of fucking Wham or Slade any day

Squeee Fri 10-Nov-17 12:46:05

I really really hate what they do to music and how popular the songs become
Talk about crimes against music!

alphajuliet123 Fri 10-Nov-17 13:29:02

I've just watched the M&S ad, quite like it. The John Lewis one is ok, bit meh but not as bad as previous years.

So far I've not crossed any of them off my shopping list.

hellsbellsmelons Fri 10-Nov-17 13:34:19

Sorry, but I like the JL ad this year.
And I loved the man on the moon one.
Made me proper teary!
Good grief I'm a wuss.

Ropsleybunny Fri 10-Nov-17 13:35:07

That's actually Elbow's version on John Lennon's song and I really like it. I love Guy's voice.

this^^^^^ IN SPADES!

lthough JL is by a man.

How dare they ruin a BEATLES SONG. Tthe songs they ruin arent even XMAS ONES!

inchyrablue Fri 10-Nov-17 13:41:42

I too love Guy Garvey's voice, and think it is a gorgeous cover version.

HarrietVane99 Fri 10-Nov-17 13:56:44

How dare they ruin a BEATLES SONG

Speaking of which, the Sainsbury's 2014 Christmas ad was a total rip-off of the video for Paul McCartney's Pipes of Peace. See them both on YouTube.

gillybeanz Fri 10-Nov-17 14:01:45

I don't think you can do anything to make a Beatles song sound worse, they were hardly singers grin and it was barely music grin
They never wrote their own music anyway, if you believe the documentaries which say lots of high hippy pop artists of the time contributed.

The ads are far better than the originals in lots of cases, my gripe is they become so popular at Christmas, they aren't heard again.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy Fri 10-Nov-17 14:28:50

Oh thank God for this thread. I voiced the same opinion at work this morning (apathological hatred of these ads) - and everyone looked at me like I was a total MONSTER.

ChelleDawg2020 Fri 10-Nov-17 14:34:38

Yes I loathe them. It's not just a Christmas thing, advertisers have been doing this for years. The formula is simple:

1. Take a classic guitar-based song.
2. Ditch the guitar and get a female vocalist to sing it slowly.
3. Count the £££££££s and $$$$$$$$$$s

You can use a male vocalist at step two but must take a couple of the pound or dollar signs out.

Peachypie83 Fri 10-Nov-17 14:35:21

I used to love the Christmas ads but now they are all such a big production, I've become a bit fed up of them. They've turned me into a bit of an eye rolling cynic

PrivateParkin Fri 10-Nov-17 14:43:20

The Beatles didn't write their own music??! Yeah righto hmm
