Not a lot, just a little tinted moisturiser, mascara and a lip colour. I know I do, but I don't do it often - just evenings out and certainly not for the school run/work or daily life.

So why do people trowel it on? Once you can see the make-up it's like wearing a mask. I know that people get used to seeing themselves with a fake face, but surely easing off a bit would be beneficial?

When did it become the norm for young teenagers to wear a full face of heavy make-up?

It seems such a peculiar thing to do.

I think it has just become the fashion for young people right now. They are copying youtubers and bloggers. It makes them look much older than their years.

Well maybe, but people who you don't think look very nice might like the way they look, or just not care.

If you have ever watched one, they trowel it on -foundation (often a mix of two/three), concealer, contour in a multitude of shades, highlighter, powder, blush, eyeshadows, liner, mascara, brow pomade, fake lashes etc etc. Most of the "stars" teens aspire to look like, say Kylie Jenner, wear thick, over exaggerated make up. It's just the fashion, like perms and blue eyeshadow was in the 80s.

I never wear any makeup unless for a special night out. I never have even as a 60s teen I only wore eyeshadow and a bit of lipstick. I hate the feel of the stuff on my skin. I think women look best au naturel unless they have a skin complaint or are dressing up for an evening.

YABU to decide how you think other people would look better. Some might prefer the way they look with no makeup, a little makeup, full makeup.

You're entitled to see somebody and think that you wouldn't wear that on your face, but not that they shouldn't on theirs!

I agree the vast majority of women do look a lot better with just a little. I think today though the fashion if you could call it that is to wear as much as you possibly can, or to turn yourself orange why just why?

YABU to think what you think looks better actually counts. You should wear what you want for you and you alone and not care what other people think looks better.

I exfoliate and moisturise with coconut oil but very rarely wear makeup. I'm confident and happy with what's already on my face and couldn't give a shiny shite what anybody else thinks or what anybody else does. I'm much happier this way.

I can kind of see your point, but then again I remember the '80s. Not sure caterpillar eyebrows and "contouring" really look any worse than electric blue mascara, stripey blusher and a fake beauty spot. It's all pretty bad. And we usually grow out of it.

ermmm... remember the 80s? I do, and I remember this absolutely vomit inducing bright blue shimmery eyeshadow that I used to apply with a paintbrush...

I do agree with you but they are trends and fashions. I don't wear make up personally (not anymore anyway) just on nights out. The contouring trend has completely passed me by and don't even get me started on the slug eyebrows... So, so ugly.

I wear a little every day. I a bit of bb cream, foundation, powder, swipe of eyeshadow, tinted lipsalve. Takes about 45 seconds, if that.

I wear quite a lot of makeup every single day. I have rosacea and without it my face looks like a boiled ham. So I wear a very thick foundation. But then I have to sort of draw my features back on as thick foundation swamps them.

I would bloody love to feel comfortable enough in my skin to not wear make up. But until I do I’ll keep trowelling it on.

I don't think it's too much/ too little but more about paying attention to your skin and not just following treads or using the exact same makeup for years when the industry changes all the time. Plus I think very few people suit black eyeliner and grey is much more effective.

Its just fashion - you might think people look better in crinolines or in bell bottoms or in platform heals or in... whatever. Quite a lot of people follow whatever's fashionable, either deliberately or because they don't want to be different to their friends or peers.

Also once people see something all the time in their peer group they think that is "normal", and a lot of people, especially young people, want to be "normal"...

I don't wear make up but DD does sometimes. I'm very meh about it as long as she doesn't look older than she is or like a clown she can choose, it's her face. I think my parents were wrong when they banned us from doing anything that didn't fit in with their worthy middle class values - they cared more about how we made them look than us in ourselves. You have to let young teens fit in a bit if that's what they want, whilst trying to help them be aware that this is a choice and the right to decide how to present themselves comes with a responsibility to be aware of what they are doing and think and question themselves before deciding whether to follow a crowd or to be different this time.

Because they're teenagers and they're following the crowd ...i wore multicoloured eyeliner and glitter eyeshadow when I was a teenager ...we generally all come to the 'tone it down' conclusion with age.

Although I've occasionally seen a mid 50s woman wearing powder blue eyeshadow and frosted Lipstick and don't think they got the memo that that look is DEAD.

i dont think lipstick looks good on anyone with less that absolutely perfect teeth (or at least not me). but we normal teeth, a little lip balm looks ok.

mascara and concealer makes everyone look better, i agree. but the texture of foundation and powders and most blushes looks quite odd.

i wear make up but i tend to focus on mascara, lashes and concealer these days whereas in the past i wore more.

I have a friend who wears foundation caked on because of her 'bad skin'. I saw her recently (when she presumably wasn't expecting to be seen) without makeup and, although she's obviously spotty, she looked so much better.

I can remember girls at school doing the same, but nowadays it's all the additional stuff on top.
