AIBU?

AIBU to ask you to write a snarky reply for me?

My partner's father texted me the following today: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Grandma and Grandad

It is my birthday. It is not my child's birthday. It is not any of their other grandchildren's birthdays. They don't even like me and have made it clear by saying 'you are not part of our family' out loud, to my face.

I am very tempted to send a snarky reply but (a) I shouldn't rock the boat as we have news to give them at the weekend they won't like and - much much more importantly - (b) I can't think of anything good. Grin All I've got is:
'I didn't know you were a medium, X. Could you please tell nan and granddad thanks and that we did spend the money on beer, as they'd have wanted' (my nan and granddad are dead and I miss them, X is a teetotaler...)

(Light hearted in case that isn't obvious!)

Send that!

It will annoy them much more to get no reply whatsoever. They'll never know if you saw it then or what your reaction was.

AIBU to ask what the news is? (Tell me to mind my own business!!!)

I'd just send the old MN faithful "Are you on glue?"

Mate.

Is this really the funnest way to spend your birthday? There's pictures of Tom Hardy naked out there for the googling.

Send back a quick "thanks", and don't waste any more headspace on them.

Pah, just ignore them. If it will wind them up in future call them Grandma/Grandad to their faces.

I'd send back...

"Thanks...luv u"

Yeah they've given you a license to call them GM and GD in future!

New phone, who’s this?

I like "are you on glue?" Grin short and simple

No reply won't bother them. They think this is normal

The news is that I'm pregnant again with a much wanted baby Smile

I do actually enjoy fantasising about saying sarky things to them when it's funny as it's a change from actually being furious

Sounds to me like they know you are pregnant and this is their p/a way of letting you know.

Ok, well I'm a wilful optimist here. The grandparents of your unborn child who have up until now been horrible to you have finally accepted you and are wishing you happy birthday.

Thank you and move on. Hope you had a good birthday.

'Who is this?' always works for me. :)

Meh, bit presumptuous but appears it could be a genuine gesture...

i feel a bit sorry for your kids, sounds a bit of a mess if this is how you & your kids grandparents are with one another

If I received that I would wonder if my partner had told them they were going to be grandparents.

‘Sorry - deleted this number, who is this again?’

Congratulations!

Agree with PPs that no reply probably best.

They definitely know.

And they are taunting you with it.

Can you see your way to building some bridges before your baby arrives?

Why won't they like that you're pregnant? Sorry for missing the point

Report
caffelatte100 · 07/11/2017 21:03

Yes, I think they know as well. But it's a friendly and small gesture. Sounds like a weird relationship. I wouldn't send your reply, it too is weird...

schoolgaterebel · 07/11/2017 21:07

Your reply is a bit strange and I didn't don't get it at first.

Are they referring to themselves as grandparents because they realise you are pregnant with their grandchild?

Why don't you just reply 'thanks x'
