AIBU?

To think that Grease is the only film that could undergo analysis and still remain as beloved as ever?

Currently watching 'New:The Grease Story' on ch5+1. I love Grease. I was taken to see it with a friend for my 11th birthday treat and have loved it ever since.

My DC have all watched it. DD1, no remarkable effects other than a mutual love. DD2 and DS demanded 'Mum, can you please lip sync', when I clearly had to sing along. The judge my singing and I am found wanting!

Anyway, back to this programme, no matter how much they pick apart the film, I still love it! AIBU? I will not listen if you say I am

Not keen, sorry! But not as bad as Dirty Dancing which I have only watched for 10 minutes before I had to turn it off 🤢

Na I love it as well. So much of my young years has been ruined since they all turned out to be preditors, nobody’s taking grease away as well Angry

The plot is pretty grim.

If you want a man (regardless of how poorly he treats you) you must change your image, personality and take up smoking.

The tunes are good actors are good and attractive. This is what saves it.

Did you ever see that theory that outlines how Sandy is dead for the entire film, having drowned at the beginning? The events of the film are her dying dream.

Loved it when I was a kid, hate it now. It's so sexist and horrible.

We watched it at a friend's hen do a few years ago and although we still loved the music and most of the characters, we were pretty horrified by the message sent by Sandy's transformation at the end...

Pretty women is similar in that dodgy sexism but i still love it - even though i cringe st parts and see it’s obvious flaws.

The Quiet Man is another favourite - at least it has the excuse of being from a different era.

Old Bond movies too.

NO NO NO!! She has changed but then she is demanding he steps up to her standards! She makes him change more than he changes her!

I’m with you Brio

Absolutely detest Grease and Dirty Dancing

Terrible films,

DD2 loves Grease though, her saving grace is that she also loves The Lost Boys which is a fantastic film Smile

Loved it as a kid, still love the songs but hate the film now. I wouldn't promote it to kids beyond a sing song.

Two words: Grease 2.

Much better than Grease.

My DD2 (mini me) totally gets it and says she sorted him.

I think we can watch it with our girls and talk to them about the era it was made in, the era it was about and the era we are in now. I lived in the era it was made in, my mum lived in the era it was about, and me, my DDs and DM live in the era we are in now.

Still, none of this takes away my love!

"NO NO NO!! She has changed but then she is demanding he steps up to her standards! She makes him change more than he changes her"

Even if you see it like that, what a revolting relationship dynamic.

Anyway she doesn't make him change except to, I don't know, study or something? She just turns herself into what she thinks she should look like.

Peer pressure. Bullying. Unprotected sex. Two timing. Sandy upping her game when she realises that Danny has got more oomph or some shite than her, so on goes the heels, the tight trousers etc.

Nope. I also don't buy into the it was set in a different era. Lots of things were set in a different era, but we don't love them now.

They both changed at the end to let the other one know how serious they were about each other.
BUT 'Sandy' is in complete control at the end, he is following her like a puppy Wink and she is obviously enjoying her new found 'vamp self'. Why should she stay scared of her own sexuality forever?

Its a feelgood movie, its sheer 50s nostalgia but also timeless as there will be teens with the same hopes and dreams, fears and insecurities, trying to fit in, trying to be 'cool', trying to be 'themselves' forever.

I loved it when it came out and I love it now, its pure escapism. Sometimes thats just what you need.

Nobody has to like it of course but it is pretty much every high school ever built in one degreee or another.

Oh, I lurve Grease!! The only thing I have against it being shown so early is I have two boys. One 10, and one 14. Both completely against Grease even though never bloody seen it
When the 10 year old was up and the film was on.... try singing along and you're told in a sing song voice to shut up...
The Grease story that was on later, the 14 year old pointing out "lame" bits.
Gave up in the end. Going to re-watch tomorrow when the feckers are at school and it's hopefully shown on Demand!

I refuse to take an adults standpoint on this film and see it through my 8 year old's self's eye.

Apparently some of the words in Greased Lightening are a bit risky. Something about shit and getting lots of tits. Never noticed till I had it pointed it out to me. And the bit about girls creaming. Nice. Still love the film though.

OP I had some medical issues including a spinal injury in an accident that nearly killed me- and gained a lot of weight and it was hard to lose

And I'm single, man pleasing has never been on my agenda

Interesting that you assume I wanted to beat the weight gain for a man.

Your eight year old will get the same message, maybe she won't be able to articulate it but it's there.

Not a film I'm keen to watch with my DDs.

Message: women you need to change your clothes, behaviour, become over sexualised to capture your sporty poon hound man. Do Pour yourself into tight clothes for a final scene jaunty song. But be clear on this you need must change for a man

I must admit I rewatch as an adult and on singing the "Greased Lightnin" song I'm a bit "oooh how rude"!
"You know that ain't no shit we'll be getting lots of tit" (totally bypassed my little head)

then "The girls will cream, for Greased Lightning"* - I used to think it was the girls will scream for Grease Lightning as it's such a cool car!

To be fair, he changed for Sandy. He thought he had to change and got himself a letterman's jacket, was ready to give up the T-birds and his coolness.
Just Sandy thought at the same time that she had to be sexy/wear tighter clothes.
They both thought they should be more like each other.
