How long before we get a government that decides selling explosives to the general public is a bad idea?

That’s it really. Pissed off with the 3 weeks of fireworks that have been going on around me. Ask 100 people who bought fireworks what they were celebrating, you would be lucky to get one who had the correct answer

NorthernLurker Sun 05-Nov-17 18:34:36

How very joyless you are.

eyebrowsonfleek Sun 05-Nov-17 18:36:38

Bet you would get the right answer. Diwali and Bonfire Night are major celebrations.

ZooeyAndFranny Sun 05-Nov-17 18:37:38

Oh do come off it.

Needthesunshine Sun 05-Nov-17 18:39:03

I’d allow them at organised events only and not for sale to the general public. My poor dog has been terrified for days.

I have bought a bucket load of fireworks to let off in my garden shortly with my family. Rockets, loud bangers etc with all the bells and whistles. I will be celebrating having fun, we love it. If any killjoys come by I will shout 'bah humbug', get a life.

LaurieFairyCake Sun 05-Nov-17 18:40:51

The VAST majority of people use them safely

So I refuse to think about banning them because of a few numpties

pinkliquorice Sun 05-Nov-17 18:41:02

I think the fact they are celebrating is enough.
You should try it sometime, have some fun!

cathyclown Sun 05-Nov-17 18:41:04

What exactly is being celebrated tonight....

ChristinaParsons Sun 05-Nov-17 18:41:17

FFS. fireworks are not part of Diwali. So what are you celebrating on bonfire night?

SecretLimonadeDrinker Sun 05-Nov-17 18:44:48

I have seen on Facebook a friend (with young children present) had fireworks in the garden. They had been drinking, one firework just missed their shed, one they put, and lit, in the ground upside down. This is why I'm against fireworks for the public.

Brazenhussy0 Sun 05-Nov-17 18:45:49

Nah I'm with you, OP. Selling explosives to the general public is just nuts.
Organised displays = yes.
Any old Joe Idiot on the street = no fucking way.

The number of horror stories of fireworks being put in people's hoods, through letterboxes, tied to pet animals etc. etc.
And people use the same arguments for their sale as Americans use against bloody gun control. 'Oh but why should we all have our toys taken away because a minority of people are dangerous assholes?'

Because your toys are fucking explosives, that's why.

*And breathe.*

pinkliquorice Sun 05-Nov-17 18:46:48

My family celebrate Christmas not actually because of Jesus birth but because it’s fun, we don’t mention the reason behind Christmas at all.
And I’m sure many people who celebrate Christmas just do it for the decorations, presents, food rather than to actually celebrate Jesus birth.
We celebrate Easter because Easter egg hunts are fun.
We celebrate bonfire night because fire works are fun.

VerticalBlinds Sun 05-Nov-17 18:47:34

Huh? Bonfire night/ fireworks night is a major thing in the UK? And is not exactly new.... Remember remember the 5th of november - that thing? Guy Fawkes, getting foiled in plot to blow up the houses of parliament. Ring any bells?

Although it does make me laugh (and I have done it myself) when this is explained thus:

Q: What is bonfire night about?
A: Celebrating guy fawkes trying to blow up the houses of parliament

grin

SideOrderofSprouts Sun 05-Nov-17 18:47:56

It should be organized displays only

insancerre Sun 05-Nov-17 18:48:20

Fireworks should not be available to the general public
They should be at organised displays only

justbinthefeckinbyebyebox Sun 05-Nov-17 18:48:45

10 people are blinded because of fireworks every year.

Is that acceptable?

Yadnbu

Oly5 Sun 05-Nov-17 18:49:16

Ha, I agree.. you’re totally joyless. The vast majority of people handle them safely. As for alcohol.. that’s another matter isn’t it?

insancerre Sun 05-Nov-17 18:49:25

Vertical blinds
Yes. That's it exactly!
We are celebrating the under dog in true British fashion

Is it acceptable that 10 people are blinded?

Probably as much as owning a ladder or a car ....

We don’t ban things that have risk

More than ten people died from sausages last year

thegoodnameshadgone Sun 05-Nov-17 18:51:07

Agree Oly5 totally agree.

insancerre Sun 05-Nov-17 18:51:53

I could have been killed as a baby when a firework was thrown into my pram
The pram was destroyed but luckily I wasn't in it at the time
But I could have been
