To think that crisps have gone downhill?

I bought a pack of salt and vinegar discos today and my mouth is completely intact. No burns. No tongue peeling off. None of that.

They've been neutered angry And it's not even just Discos! McCoys have gone right down as well. Crisp companies need to up the flavour a bit, none of these would make a good crisp butty anymore.

OydNeverDeclinesGin Thu 02-Nov-17 21:54:27

That's shite! What's the point of a salt n vinegar Disco that doesn't lead to mouth burns confused
You need some space raiders.

JaneJeffer Thu 02-Nov-17 21:55:38

Get some Tayto, the proper ones not the fake Northern Irish ones (controversial) grin

AccrualIntentions Thu 02-Nov-17 21:56:36

The last time I had one of those massive train station WHSmith grab bags of salt and vinegar discos they were fantastic, loads of excess mouth burning powder and everything! The last few multipack ones I've had have been shite though.

GetOutOfMYGarden Thu 02-Nov-17 21:57:51

JaneJeffer wish I could, I'm up in the north of England and there's no Tayto around here sad

MyNewBearTotoro Thu 02-Nov-17 21:57:52

I totally agree. I don’t need my crisps to be natural - they’re supposed to be unhealthy! Nice n’ Spicy Nik-Naks are no good now they’ve taken out the MSG. Bring back artificial colourings and flavourings.

ToTheCrystalDome Thu 02-Nov-17 21:58:08

It’s not proper salt and vinegar unless your lips go white!

OydNeverDeclinesGin Thu 02-Nov-17 22:00:42

Aldi smoky bacon are good. Proper fake flavour and loads of it.
Or m and s cheese tasters. Allege to have no artificial blah blah blah but are a pretty wild orange colour.

JaneJeffer Thu 02-Nov-17 22:02:51

Ah that's no good GetOut. When I lived in London there was an Indian shop that used to randomly get in Irish things, could be Tatyto, Kimberley biscuits, etc. It was such a treat to find them! Will I post some over to you? grin

frankie001 Thu 02-Nov-17 22:05:25

If they sold the flavouring separately I would buy it and put it on everything!

EvieBlack Thu 02-Nov-17 22:06:58

Nothing is as good as it used to be.

KFC for instance. Back in the day it was so greasy you had to wipe the oil off your chin afterwards and so salty you needed pints of liquid to avoid your face caving in.

But then they made it healthier, less greasy and less salty and completely ruined it 😡

Shoppingwithmother Thu 02-Nov-17 22:07:55

You just have to be lucky with the pack and the individual disco - I was so busy at work today that I didn’t eat all day and then ate a packet of SnV Discos in the car.

To start with I was disappointed, but the odd surprise crisp had me physically wincing - it was like all the powder was on that Disco!

I did get heartburn after as well - I don’t think they were good on a totally empty stomach.

Salt and vinegar squares are just as good as ever and my go-to anti sickness cure, especially in cars.

Yes, SnV McCoys are shit and have lost all their powers...

Davros Thu 02-Nov-17 22:10:28

Walkers roast chicken are still good.
Don’t Morrisons sell Taytos?

GetOutOfMYGarden Thu 02-Nov-17 22:10:52

EvieBlack there's a KFC I'll go out of my way for because they don't do the thing where they're meant to let the oil drip off. They also somehow end up with loads of flavouring in places and it's beautiful. The one close to my house is crispy to say the least.

Cookingongas Thu 02-Nov-17 22:11:49

Health and safety give bad innit?!your not wrong- crisps have gone shit. Pot noodles - shit. I have to ADD salt to pot noodle and ready salted crisps now sadangry

If I was looking to be healthy I wouldn’t be eating salt and vinegar squares would I?

Foreveryseason Thu 02-Nov-17 22:14:34

@Janejeffer i am totally loving your name. That takes me back to school!!!

On the other hand what is this devils work Southern Tayto you talk of??!! Northern Tayto are the best, strongest flavoured Tayto ever!!!!!!!!

gingerbreadmam Thu 02-Nov-17 22:15:16

Transformasnack brave beef are out of this world. I vouch for salt and vinegar squares too. Pickled onion space raiders have changed a bit.

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel Thu 02-Nov-17 22:15:42

Try the Cooperative sea salt and Chardonnay vinegar crisps.

There is some proper mouth burning potential there grin

prettypetal Thu 02-Nov-17 22:15:47

Reading all of this thread made me laugh : ) I ate loads of old crisps the other day that feels like I’ve drank turps, my tongue feels all naked and stripped bare, more sensitive & it has a big wide pink line going down the middle like something has taken a strip of the flesh off. I have been eating space raiders, and some other cheapy old crisps from the tuck shop at work .... I presume these types are the ones you are missing / reminiscing about ? No more turps crisps for me, my tongue feels like a brand new one as it looks like some of the skin has come off 😳

BreconBeBuggered Thu 02-Nov-17 22:16:49

You need soy sauce in your pot noodles.
Tell you what I got the other day: big chunks of actual flavour which had escaped the manufacturing process and ended up in the bag. Wondred what the hell it was in there. Maybe I've got all your flavouring.

JaneJeffer Thu 02-Nov-17 22:22:04

Thanks For, but we'll have to agree to disagree on the Tayto grin

Reflexella Thu 02-Nov-17 22:22:07

There are too many wanky hipster crisps too.
Pickled onion monster munch all the way

allinclusive Thu 02-Nov-17 22:25:07

Ah that explains the nice and spicy nik naks. YYY to salt and vinegar squares......I'm wondering if chip sticks are still around.

QueenJane Thu 02-Nov-17 22:26:06

Pickled onion Space Raiders are rotten now. Very little flavour now.

You used to have to stop a bag of SnV McCoys halfway and swill some germolene round your mouth sad

Shoppingwithmother Thu 02-Nov-17 22:39:26

I have also got my 2 DCs addicted to salt and vinegar squares on long car journeys. So there’s 3 of us eating a bag each as slowly as possible to make them last, and my poor DH (driving) having to wind down the window as he’s gagging at the smell of vinegar which he hates!
