Parking!!

So petty but I don’t know if iabu?!
We live in a semi detached house, our neighbours are three girls who have a car each. My husband and I have a car each. We have a front garden with a path (yellow house) so no drive to park on. There’s also an alley (red) running down the side of our house which isn’t a massive problem but I’d rather not park in front of it as my car has been scratched a few times by people on bikes/idiots coming through the alley. We both fit our cars on the street outside our house. The girls next door have a drive big enough for 2 cars (blue house & blue cars) they have just got a 3rd car and instead of parking on the street in front of their drive way or further up, they have chosen to park one car directly outside our house, meaning we have to park further away or across the street which is obviously not a huge problem but means our 3 kids have to cross a road to get to the car. It’s more the cheeky-ness of the situation that’s grating on me. They know we have always parked there and we’re in and out a lot throughout the day (I work part time/school runs/husband works shifts) I’ve started parking in front of their house but all three of them just knocked on my door together and asked me to move my car. so I guess my question is aibu to be pissed off they have taken the parking space? Or should I get over it and let them inconvenience us all?

What did they ask you to move?? Unless you were blocking their drive? Did you move?

It's not your parking space though. It's a public road unless I'm missing something? Just park a bit further up. YABU

When you park in front of their house you are blocking them in. That is V U

Or you could convert your garden into a driveway?

Report
SilverSpot · 01/11/2017 22:13

So you blocked their drive?

Are you fucking serious?? Yes you are U. No your neighbours are not U for putting 1 car on the street outside your house.

If you’re blocking them in then You’re not being reasonable. Why don’t you just have a conversation with them?

I think YABU. Sorry. Yes it's a pain but it's never ok to block them in.
Can you drop your kerb at all so you can create a driveway?

Did you block their driveway?
Is it a public road?

starzig · 01/11/2017 22:15

Perhaps it is not convenient for the street 1 to block the other 2 in. If by parking in front of their house you mean you are blocking their drive then you are in the wrong. Unless you have private parking then street space is 1st come 1st served I'm afraid. Suck it up or buy a house with parking. Could always see if you could rent their drive, maybe they would like the extra cash, you never know.

Did you park over their dropped kerb?

I think you are being unreasonable, annoying as it is, road parking is a free-for-all and first come gets it. You can’t park over their dropped kerb but you can park in front of their house if it’s a regular kerb.

YABU

You don't own the public road outside your house and you don't get to park across someone's drive because 'your' space is taken.

Don't move your car when they ask you (as long as you're not blocking them in)!

They can park anywhere that's legal but equally so can you. They can park in front of your house and you can park in front of theirs. The only U bit is that the CFs ask you to move when you do it but happily do the same thing to you!

Looking at your diagram you have a driveway but don't park on it? If so you're in the wrong.

SpotAGuillemot · 01/11/2017 22:23

Have they actually got a dropped curb or have they just concreted their front garden so they can park on it?

Yabu obviously if you are blocking them in! If it really bother you having to park away from your house can’t you just pave your front garden too?

She said she had a path not a drive.

From your description and picture
Legally
the driveway = their space
the road in front of your house = not your space, anyone's space
the road in front of their house = not a space, as driveway access is a legal thing, thus blocking them in so they have to knock on your door to get out is illegal

This sounds so unbelievably like my road/neighbours! You don't live in the outskirts of Bristol, do you?

Yabu for parking in front of their driveway

They’ve done nothing wrong

I'd hate to think how you would get on on our street. I am sometimes the next street down.

Yabu
You don't own the road unfortunately. This is why people pay big premiums for housing with parking. Otherwise it's down to chance. You cannot think that having children give you a greater right to the road and you also must not block their driveway.

Can you convert your frontage to a driveway.

  1. the public road is for anyone who has a road legal car to park on. You don’t have any claim on it.

  2. you cannot park across a dropped kerb and/or block anyone’s access to the road. If their cars were in their drive when you blocked them they could call the police and have your car towed.

If you have parked in front of a dropped kerb YABVU. You own the house not the road.

Yeah, you can’t go about blocking their driveway. That’s proper cuntish behaviour.

They can park outside your house. You cannot block their drive if they have a dropped kerb.

I didn’t block them in, & didn’t park on a dropped curb and yes I moved when they asked me to!
