AIBU?

To ration the Halloween sweets?

DD is 4. I’m letting her have 2 a day.

Just wondering if I’m being a total Scrooge or if this is fair? I feel a bit mean. Also don’t want her getting in the habit of sweets every day so feeling miffed as to how we’ll get through the millions of sweets she got yesterday.

I feel like we have to get through them quickly to have a break before the Christmas sweets Grin. It's totally up to you though. I have always let mine have more than they usually would for the few days after Halloween, and with DD being 13 I am less strict. To be honest they both lose interest after a while any way. But at 4 your DD won't think you're mean.

I take a handful or 2 to put in their Christmas stockings - they lose interest after a while - and like a lot of parents, we don't want sweets as an everyday thing, so it works for us.

We do some on Halloween night, then a couple every non-school night. None during the week.

It really really depends on the child though. DD isn't that fussed but some children are obsessed.

Wow how many did they get?!

I let them gorge for a few days. Wheel the bags out at a cinema trip then bin them.

What does 2 a day mean?

2 actual sweets or 2 (for example) mini bags of Haribo?

I think YANBU anyway and as PPs said, you can always keep the rest for Christmas.

Easy for me as my 9yo only likes some sweets and even thenndoesnt gorge.
Oh the shame when she rifles through the proffered tub and then (at least very sweetly and politely) says "no thank you" Blush

I tend to let her have what she wants on the day as I know it won't be loads. Then I spirit the whole lot away to the snacks drawer, where they end up in party bags or whatever for the next few months.

Any ideas what to do with a surplus supply of sweets as I bought far too many and hardly any visits this year. Nobody eats them in our house and I can't palm them off to nieces as I expect they have enough and my sister wouldn't be happy either.
I seems a waste to throw them.

We ration too. And last year both DC lost interest. They got so many that the celebration tin lid can’t go back on.

I gave mine 2 sweets each after trick or treating and will be rationing them each day as they are very sensitive to sugar. It's probably a bit mean but I'm not a big fan of sweets for young children on a regular basis. I also confiscated all the lolly pops and chucked them once they were in bed as they like to run about with them in their mouths Confused they haven't noticed Grin

scurryfunge do you know anyone on a PTA with a Xmas fair coming up? They can be sold on refreshments table, added into bottles for guess the weight /number of objects or small prizes on stalls.

Better still, give them to your local food bank and really make some mum's day when she can treat her kids!

Not involved with any PTAs but food bank is a great idea, thanks. I didn't think sweets would be allowed.

We never ever have sweets or chocolate at home. Only at parties. I’d rather they just had a load and then it was gone. I vaguely think research shows its less bad for your teeth that way.

I moderated how much they took at each house so they had at most 6 sweets each which they were allowed to do as they pleased. Both had a few yesterday and now they’ve been abandoned in their coat pockets so i’ll probably chuck them.

Oh god ours got tonnes of sweets, way too many - of iveationed to two a day they'd still have them at Easter. And by some twist of fate I bought loads of stuff to give out and didn't have any kids at our door so I'm wading in sweets and satsumas here.

Hadn't thought about putting them into the food bank - ill bundle some up and drop them off, we really don't need it but it didn't feel fair not to let the kids go guising.

I'm with Alanna, let them have a load then it's done with. Although my DD is pretty restrained!

My friend hid her dcs sweets this morning, they where not a happy bunch of people Grin My own dc hasn't touched hers today she doesn't actually like sweets and when I pulled her Halloween bag out of the cupboard last night it still had last year's bounties in it.
Hide, ration whatever you have to do to keep sane op.

As far as I know you need to have sealed sweets to give to a food bank. So I would imagine things like chocolate bars or haribo would be ok but not loose celebrations for example
But worth checking with your local food bank

My 4 year old has free access to sweets and tends to eat 1-2 a day. i grew up in a culture where 1 or 2 sweets a day a very much normal and the general belief is if you ration sweets, you just make them more desirable. Son is very slim, so am I, so it works for us.
