I'm in a terrace and my neighbours son has one, we barely hear it but they are very very strict with him about when he can practice and stuff and they have asked me to just let them know of its getting a bit much. You can do it without being selfish (and Victorian terraces have lovely thick walls) but selfish fickwits will do it wrong!

Had this many years ago with the teenager across the road. His friends came round too and formed a rock group. The noise was awful, every day from coming home from school to late at night so i went and asked them to quieten down. I was told to fuck off so reported them to the council along with others and had them shut down.

Depends. My lovely first neighbour's had a son who us now working in the music business. He had a drum kit and an electric guitar (and a piano). They kept the hours down, times strictly between 9am and 8pm. And tried to pursuade him to practice straight from school when we werecdtill at work. No problems at all.
Without their consideration, it could have been horrific.

One of my neighbours plays the drums. He's very good. I work from home often and have windows/doors open if it's warm enough. It's far less intrusive than building work. He never plays for more than half an hour at a time. Maybe you could ask him to do this?

My BIL & SIL bought their son a piano when they lived in a block of small, new build flats - the kind with no noise insulation at all.
We did tell them that the neighbours might not be too thrilled but apparently the child was such an amazing piano player that the neighbours should be grateful to be allowed to hear him. I mean, he's ok but no one needs to hear 3 hours of practice and scales every day.
Anyway, my point, if there is one, is yes, they are BU, and you are a saint. I would definitely put a note through the door, I'd try to keep it civil.
We met our in-laws neighbour once, DH said something about the piano & I swear I saw the neighbours BP rise about 40 points. The vein in his neck stood out and he clenched his fists and teeth. Poor bloke. They must have had a party when the in-laws moved out.
