To not understand how doing food shopping daily is more expensive than weekly/monthly

I have always shopped daily, I prefer it as I like to chose what we are eating on the day. I find we have left waste and it's generally more enjoyable.

We have 1 DD and another on the way, so in terms of convenience this may change in the future, however many people common on how expensive doing it like that is and I just don't get it!

I buy exactly what we need, and whatever isn't used on the day will be used on a following day. Of there are deals I will still stock up occasionally.

Is this really true?

I guess it depends. If you only buy small packs then it usually (not always) works out more expensive than buying a bigger pack and using it for more meals.

I think if you can avoid impulse buying, however, it might not make that much difference.

There is also perhaps additional expense in petrol/parking etc - if you walk/cycle to the local shop these won't apply to you.

Walking to my local shop would cost more than a 2 mile drive to Aldi as their prices are considerably dearer. It's OK for an occasional panic buy for tea, but I wouldn't regularly buy fresh food there, particularly meat. It's more focused on things like ready meals too.

If a local shop is good value, then a reduction in wastage could offset benefits like bigger packs which aren't guaranteed to be best value anyway.

I think the theory is that the more often you are in the shops, the more likely you are to buy extra stuff that you don’t need. Or, as someone else has already said, your most convenient shop may not have the best prices.

If you only buy the same things you would have bought on a one-off trip but spread it out over the week, then of course it’s not more expensive.

We used to do daily and would buy way more than we needed. Easily £20 a day when there were only 2 of us.
