AIBU?

about friend calling herself a "pleb"?

Backstory: my group of friends is largely, but by no means entirely, privately-educated. I would say about a 70/30 split. I have one friend who seems to have a real chip on her shoulder about not having been to a private school. She often refers to herself as a "pleb" as if daring anyone to contradict her. She calls anyone who was privately educated a "posh twat". What really gets my goat is that apart from being state-educated she had a VERY cushy upbringing - private music lessons, stay-at-home mother, big house in the London commuter belt...her parents own a bloody sailing boat for God's sake! They obviously weren't hard-up! She acts like I'm a Rothschild when a) my mother went back to work when I was a toddler and b) my parents live in the North, so my childhood home probably cost a fraction of what hers did.

I really resent her acting like she's had such a hard life and I've had everything handed to me on a plate. Not to mention it seems pretty disrespectful to people who actually did grow up in poverty. There's one guy in our friendship group who can be a bit of an arse about people's "class", but I really can't imagine anyone else looking down on her for the school she went to.

Sorry, I guess I just wanted a rant...but AIBU??

YANBU. That sounds tedious.

I'd dish a bit of it back to her...you seem to have plenty to use as ammo

how tedious for you to be sailing on the holidays from your plebby comprehensive

simply awful for you to have had mamma at home waiting as you fell off the council school bus

some of these private music teachers can be terribly laissez faire, do you think your parents got good value for money since you haven't touched the Steinway for 30 years?

Agreed she sounds annoying.

"LOL yes such a pleb! You had your yummy mummy mother waiting for you at home baking cakes and sailing holidays, proper funny you are! Poshest girl in the local comp you must have been!"

"ooooooh [Laura's] angry again - must be hungry, why don't you just eat that chip off your shoulder?!"

"[Laura] the champagne socialist is at it again! Didn't realize the cut off for being a pleb was a half a mil home countries house!"

Do you actually like her? If so I'd probably just ask her nicely WTF her issue is because it is getting tiring.

If you and others don't like her - just take steps to cut her out of the group.

Just say plebs don't have yachts and leave it at that.

I'd find her referring to her friends (you included?) as "posh twats" more obnoxious than calling herself a "pleb".

But everyone irritates the tits off their friends in some way or another. Grin

Is this perhaps just her "thing"? Is she a good friend in other respects?

She sounds dreadful. And about 15.

I’m state educated and opposed to the idea of private education but have plenty of friends who were privately educated. I can’t imagine why on earth it bothers her where you went to school.

She sounds remarkably like someone I know.

...and the person I know also has a cruising boat and is happy to vilify loudly such nasty capitalist concepts as landlords and private schooling-despite being one and partaking of the other for her DCs.

It's fucking tedious.

Sounds like she is just really jealous of you all.

It all sounds a bit Lily-Alleny (sorry to any of her fans but this is how she comes across to me)
