AIBU?

To ask if anyone in rl has ever actually met anyone who is 'offended by a poppy?

My Facebook feed is full of memes declaring that people are going to 'wear their poppy with pride and they don't care who they offend'. My nan is the latest culprit and I've called her out on it. Cue lots of her friends spouting racist bollocks about people not being able to sell them blah blah. My nan spouting shit about what a good heart I have because I can't see the bad in people. Angry I'm 34. I'm not a fucking child. And breathe!

No-one ever.

And I have never seen anyone wearing a white poppy either.

Why do they think people aren't able to sell them? Is it because they aren't British?

No never.

I’m seeing the same type stuff on FB
‘FB has removed this photo as it offends people, share it now before it’s removed again.’
Then loads of people have shared it.
I doubt any of them have ever met anyone in RL who are so offended by the Poppy sellers/wearers

I've never met anyone who has said they find the poppy offensive.

Yep, an ex-friend of mine. She's a twat about a lot of things though.

There are always stories going around at this time of year that people are banned from selling them in certain places so as not to offend (who?) it is bollocks, fake news shit. I haven't seen it yet but know I will in the next few days.

Nope.

But I did read a tirade from a bloke on a local village FB page about how it's disgusting how local schools were only selling white poppies (which represents all casualties of war, not just military).

Turns out it was an unfounded claim. The shock....Hmm

Oh it's better than that - good British (white) people aren't allowed to see then their local area because it offends 'them'. 'Them' being Muslims or anyone with brown skin. It pissed me off. It isn't true, it's a falsehood spread via social media to stir up hate and it gives me the rage.

I wear a white poppy and I have ideological issues with the messages put out at this time of year with the Royal British Legion etc, but I wouldn’t say I was offended by the red poppy. I’m offended by the actions of our Government and past Governments that it has been used to celebrate, though.

Yes, I have and I have known people to wear white poppies. But they aren't professionally offended or going around shouting at poppy sellers. I just know a lot of hippies/liberals.

Report
WorraLiberty · 29/10/2017 12:59

Nope, never.

Same as I've never met anyone offended by Christmas or Easter.

I've met lots of people though who keep declaring they're 'afraid of causing offence', for example by sending a Christmas card to their Muslim neighbours.

It's bloody ridiculous and I know a lot of Muslim people who get pretty upset/embarrassed about the assumption they're so easily bloody offended.

If liberals/hippies are the people who, whilst not being offended, choose to wear a different course poppy, why is it the Muslim community getting all of the stick?! It makes me so angry!

I'm in NI and it's an issue here.

I think it's a slightly paranoid trope that was sparked by this particular crime;

(Rather than hordes of Brits looking at Poppys and huffing)

I wear my white poppy because it belonged to my D Day veteran grandfather- I still give to the poppy appeal

Yes sorry, NI is different I know. I meant mainland.

I can understand why it's an issue in NI. My nan is an idiot. And she lives abroad so really her issue.

Nope. I see hundreds of those 'share this if you'll wear the poppy with pride/if you think it's disgusting we're not allowed to wear the poppy' blah blah and have never ever seen or heard anyone have an issue with it. It's pure goading to stoke racist views and appeals to/is fallen for by largely thick, uneducated, racist people.

Yes, I've known maybe a half dozen people, one of whom seem to take offense at anything, three who were Jehovah's Witnesses and made declarations against the poppy, one visitor at work (that was funny, he was spouting off at the receptionist, our MD came and escorted him from the premises, we have a huge number of ex forces employees). I'm sure I've seen others too.

Yep, I had a lecturer at uni who was a white poppy wearer and would spout about the evils of the red poppy 'glorifying war' at every opportunity. Grrr
