AIBU?

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 29/10/2017 09:44

Absolutely. May the realisation come sooner rather than later, though. It's a bloody run away train.

It's shocking isn't it. I'm glad that society is more accepting of individuals who decide to have a sex change after years of therapy and soul searching but if this is the cost then it is too high. It's not just the medical profession that are to blame though, parents are too quick to pass on the responsibility for emotionally caring for their children onto health professionals, schools and sometimes, their children's peers.

That Australian piece is great.

I knew before I clicked on this thread what it would be about.

Yes, I do believe in decades to come that it will be seen as a scandal.

Exactly what I've been thinking. I spent my childhood feeling like I was a boy in a girl's body. I'm now a very happy woman and today's approach to gender and reassignment would have done me so much harm.

It's mad! I think the world has gone absolute bonkers! These things shouldn't be readily available! It should be difficult so people consider it properly.

And it shouldn't be available to children

No.

I think you know exactly what this thread is going to be. A load of people agreeing how women are being "eroded".

Within the first 50 replies, it'll start talking about toilets and sports.

Someone'll have a different view and be called a "s/he" or 'MRA".

Male violence will come into it, tenuously linked from trans people in prisons.

Within 100 replies, there'll be a couple of comments about it being mtf not ftm transsexuals wanting "access to women"

By reply 326, the usual people will have posted the usual replies and it'll all peter out.

And your point is what, Solaris?

It's such a sensitive topic and arouses such strong feelings on all sides. I heard a researcher interviewed on the Today programme who wanted to run a study looking at the topic, how many people are happy or regret the decisions made ( whether to change or not change). Anyway, his funding was withdrawn because the university came under pressure. If people can't even carry out research there can't possibly be a rational debate.

Wow the Australian post is great.

It's all getting s bit 'emperor and his new clothes' isn't it.

It's utterly bizzare that the NHS are chomping at the bit to wizz these kids through I feel like I'm missing something ...

I just can't understand why common sense has gone out the window

That’s a good piece. I didn’t know that about Rupert Everett, must read up on it - I’m assuming he got a load of abuse for his views?

YANBU by the way. I wonder how some of these kids will feel when they’re adults?

The irony of the phrase" it emasculates the rights of women" (first paragraph) ....

I agree with (some of) the sentiment, but the choice of the word "emasculate" is unfortunate/amusing!

Would love to know numbers, how many trans people are there, and what percentage of them has changed back?

I can’t see how a person of 14 can be utterly sure of who they want to be for the rest of their life. At that age I was desperately ‘in love’ with my then boyfriend and thought I had my whole life mapped out. A year later and my axis had shifted massively and my ‘wants’ continued to change pretty much with the season. There is no way that at such a young age I was capable of making rationally thought out decisions that would positively effect the rest of my life.

Solaris so none of the points you have raised matter? The feelings of those born with female anatomy don’t have the same rights as those who want to be a woman?

I want to be a millionaire, I want to be slim, I want many things.** Does that mean that society should give it all to me? Or does it mean that we simply have to deal the cards we have been dealt?

YANBU. We're in an Emperor's new clothes situation. Nobody dare say anything for fear of the consequences.

When I was at Uni we had the Paedophile Information Exchange affiliated to The National Council for Civil Liberties as a campaign group. Thank God that madness is over.

YANBU. We should be encouraging our kids to accept who they are, not encouraging them to change sex. If an adult chooses to undergo the procedure after many months of counselling and medical consults, that is their choice, but there's no way we should be encouraging teens to do the same.

And, and I'm aware that some will slam me for saying this, but I don't believe sex is a changeable body characteristic. If you're born with a penis you're a male, and if you're born with a vagina you're a female. Except in very rare medical cases (like hermaphrodites) is there really a 'choice' in the issue.
