To think these kids were out of order?

Hi! Looking for opinions as my big sis thinks I'm out of order and a grump!! Maybe I am... Don't get out much!!
I'm staying in a hotel for a couple of days as a birthday treat. It'd or posh, a Best Western chain hotel but mostly quiet.
Until last night, around 9.30-10.30 pm we were having drinks in the lounge area when 3 kids appeared. Aged I'd guess between 8 and 12.
They were lively, running about, doing handstands/cartwheels etc, fine, a bit annoying but fine, can't expect them to sit quietly all the time.
Then the parents (who'd been finishing a meal) came to join them and handed each of them a nerf gun.
That was it... Full of laser quest style play with screaming, shooting and ducking under/behind chairs and tables. Parents snapping pictures and laughing.
There were a few other groups trying to have a drink and most moved to the smallish bar area to avoid them.

I was really annoyed and thought they should have found more suitable games for their little dears to play.

Big sis, thinks it's their holiday too, none of our business.... Stop being a grump.

I am a grump, I've come to get away from kid noise as I'm a teacher of young kids and have young kids too so...

An ok thing to do and op is a gouch?
Or not something you'd be ok with?

Thanks?

I think I'd probably just move on with my life and not let this bother me at all.

Life is far too short.

I think it was the parents that were out of order, why would anyone think this was OK? Having said that, you should have said something at the time (to staff if you weren't comfortable asking the parents), there's no point stewing over it now.

No that's not ok.

You wanted to sit and have a quiet drink and there were kids running about as if they were in a park.

So, in short, YANBU and your sister is wrong.

If you’re a grump I would be as well! Not the kids fault really though, they were given permission by their idiot parents to run around and I bet you weren’t the only people annoyed by it.
Bloody nerf guns are a PITA at the best of times never mind when you’ve got shouting kids waiving them around in a bar.

Ladylove, my sister wouldn't let me, kind of dragged me away to the bar area. I was tipsy so thought my judgement was off!!

Am not actually stewing really, we had a nice break, so am not upset, just curious about whether other people would have minded as much as I do.

Big sis is the lovely laid back one, I'm the grouchy one.... Have been since we were kids so I was just wondering how other people feel?

YANBU. Playing with Nerf guns is not a suitable activity in a communal area of a hotel
Their parents were out of order to give them the nerf guns

None of that is appropriate in a hotel lounge, neither the gymnastics nor the nerf battle. The parents were being selfish and thoughtless.

I have four children quite close together in age (including one with ASD & ADHD); I expect them to behave in a way which is considerate towards other people.

DH and I would have minded and probably asked them to stop or complained to reception.
When we are away we like to have a relaxing drink in the hotel.
Some noise is expected whwn children are around but playing with nerf guns is way out of order.

The staff shouldn't have needed to be spoken to!

Someone should have come and stopped it. It was annoying to the other guests, something could have been damaged/broken and someone could have been hurt. They were not in a playground.

I cannot understand how people like this get away with things like that.

Sounds like very entitled kids and parents, I would have complained to the staff.

I think some people lose all sense of what is reasonable in these sort of settings. A bit like at airports - common sense or indeed common decency goes out the window.

Good thing you were able to 'escape' as it were, but I would have told the staff if you didn't feel like being confrontational with the parents.

No yanbu. Bloody nerf guns! Why not just hand them a couple of cricket bats and ball and tell 'em to crack on.

I'm a naturally grumpy sod too, but nerf guns are definitely an outside toy or your own house only if you don't mind indoor shenanigans.

That wouldn't even be allowed in the legoland hotel and kids do run around and are loud there. Parents were twats

I would have complained to Reception.

I'm not usually one for threads complaining about kids being out at night, but even I think nerf guns is taking the piss. You should have said something to the staff so they could sort it.

Hotel should have put a stop to it without being asked.

I'm pretty tolerant of other people's kids and pretty relaxed about them in hotel bars etc., but that is utterly taking the piss! YWNBU.

I agree with, itsall. The parents are at fault not the children. If they're not told how to behave and allowed to run around like circus clowns how are they supposed to learn right from wrong and respect.
Yes it is their holiday as well fair comment no one is expecting or wanting kids to sit bolt right with their fingers on their lips, well people might want it, but it ain't going to happen, of course kids play, but The parents should be instilling a bit of bloody respect.

YANBU at all.

Totally inappropriate and selfish (shoddy) parenting. It's parents like these who provoke what they would no doubt call the "anti-child" culture in the UK.

Children are lovely, and of course they have energy & high spirits. But it's their parents' job to teach them time & place for expressing themselves!

Report
flyingpigsinclover · 28/10/2017 11:56

Were they also wearing their pyjamas?

Their parents, and the children, were completely wrong to allow/do such stupid things. I know where I'd have been tempted to put the nerf gun.
