Anyone who owns black cats please remember to keep them in over Halloween. A lot of people on Halloween night and Mischief Night (the night before) think its fun to harm or even kill black cats for superstitious reasons.

So just a friendly reminder to keep all of your kitties safe! thlsmile

What's wrong? Its a genuine problem and even more dangerous with the M25 cat killer about (which reminded me to make this post). confused

Have you never heard of this?

"A lot of people on Halloween night and Mischief Night (the night before) think its fun to harm or even kill black cats for superstitious reasons."

A lot of people...are you sure?

Changerofname987654321 Fri 27-Oct-17 22:58:24

Why do you think you might be unreasonable?

I have never heard of this.

GetYourRocksOff Fri 27-Oct-17 22:58:35

I think you are getting caught up in American urban myths

Babababababybel23 Fri 27-Oct-17 22:59:35

My cat had a firework shoved down it's throat and lit a few Halloween ago. But I've never heard of the superstition reason. I figured it was a bunch of evil bastard who thought it would be funny to see an animal suffer hmm

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 Fri 27-Oct-17 23:00:56

Never heard of it either

SpareChangeDownTheSofa Fri 27-Oct-17 23:01:41

I've heard of this happening plenty of times in the UK too, I know its mainly in America but not unheard of here.

If you've seen the amount of times people put poison in food down in parks to kill dogs, its not a far reach for you to believe this too hmm

I was just trying to help people and remind them to keep their pets safe.

I don't think "Mischief Night" is a thing in the UK is it? Never heard of it.

Narnia72 Fri 27-Oct-17 23:03:46

We had mischief night in Yorkshire when I was growing up. Wasn't v nice.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 Fri 27-Oct-17 23:04:38

Oh absolutely the right thing to do spare

I just haven't heard of it

SpareChangeDownTheSofa Fri 27-Oct-17 23:04:47

I'm not saying they're doing it because they believe it will do anything for them. Its just a 'thing' people do. And growing up I heard kids in my school laughing about trying to catch a black cat.

Mischief Night is a thing here, in school groups of kids would go around and egg people's houses etc. (I never did because I was too scared of my mum!)

Floralnomad Fri 27-Oct-17 23:06:45

YANBU , but all cats should be in in the dark anyway and particularly at the moment because of the fireworks .

Babababababybel23 Fri 27-Oct-17 23:06:55

Yep we did mischief night when I was a teen. Mostly throwing eggs at other teens who were doing it. Not at random strangers. We were well behaved mischiefers. But we never planned to kill or harm an animal

bottlesandcans Fri 27-Oct-17 23:07:46

I have heard about black cats being harmed on Halloween a few times.

OP is trying to be kind so those heaping scorn on her aren't being very kind back are they? What harm is she doing just warning people?

condepetie Fri 27-Oct-17 23:07:56

If you can show a source that this is a thing then I'll believe it.

It's bullshit though, it doesn't happen. Stop perpetuating nonsense myths spread over social media. This one is at least harmless.

ShoesHaveSouls Fri 27-Oct-17 23:08:51

shock Are you joking?

I know about the cat killing nutter, but Mischief Night & cats isn't a thing is it?

I have 2 black cats (witch that I am grin )

dantdmistedious Fri 27-Oct-17 23:11:13

Seriously? The m25 killer is a nut job as far as I can tell and nothing to do with Halloween.

reetgood Fri 27-Oct-17 23:11:15

Mischief night is a thing here in West Yorkshire, but I’ve never heard of it being specifically targeted at cats. Petty vandalism mostly.

LaContessaDiPlump Fri 27-Oct-17 23:15:03

Shit. We've adopted a black cat recently. Thanks op, will keep him in he will go fucking mad though

SpareChangeDownTheSofa Fri 27-Oct-17 23:15:49

Article about cats going missing in N.Yorkshire:

Article about a cat (although not fully black) being mutilated. A quote says that “The vicar told Missy’s owner that every year, around Halloween, a ‘prank’ involving a mutilated animal occurs at the church.”

Its so odd because I always thought black cats were good luck!

specialsubject Fri 27-Oct-17 23:16:22

Mischief = vandalism.

Same as free spirit = annoying smug tosser.

MayhemandMadness01 Fri 27-Oct-17 23:18:20

Mischief night is a thing here as well - liverpool. Someone threw a stone at our front window and smashed it a couple of yrs ago. I think its more up north, night before halloween.
