To think i should have lost some weight?

I am very overweight and for the last 2 weeks I've cut out sugar. This is massive for me as on a regular day I would eat a sharing bag of chocolate, biscuits, sweets on top of my usual meals. So now I am eating the same but minus the 1000s of calories of all the sugar treats. So, for example, a usual day will be -

Breakfast - wholemeal toast with cashew nut butter, banana
Lunch - 1x ham sandwich or a sausage roll, grapes
Dinner - sausage casserole, greek yoghurt and then fruit

Sometimes I've had pizza and unhealthy options but no different to my usual diet just minus all the snacks. Sometimes i was eating up to 2000 calories in sugar filled snacks.

I am sticking with it but its a but gutting not to see a massive difference. Ive lost 4 pounds but nothing this week. Surely it should be falling off given I am 4 stone overweight?

You haven't given up Sugar - there are loads of carbs in there.

I've lost 4 stone since January on the Blood Sugar Diet. Worth researching it.

You’ll only lose weight if you’re in a calorie defecit regardless of what you eat, so if your normal meals are still giving you more calories than you burn the cutting down sugar won’t make much difference.

You really need to count the calories going in and how many you are burning up.
2000 calories is for an active woman dependent on weight/ height etc.
You may well still be taking in 2000 calories on what you are eating (sausage rolls are not your friend sorry).
Hence no weight loss.
My fitness pal is your friend for this.

I'm no diet guru, but I can imagine a scenario where someone could reduce their calories significantly but not lose weight. For instance, say you need 2,000 calories a day to maintain your weight. You were formerly eating 4,000 with the sugar. You're now eating 2,000. In that case, you won't gain loads of weight, but you won't lose much either. You will, however, still be experiencing health benefits of not consuming so much sugar!!

It's surprisingly hard to lose weight by calorie restriction alone - to lose at any rate you have to go down to really tiny portions of food. Gentle exercise makes it a lot easier.

It doesn't automatically come off fast just because you're overweight.

I was about 6/7st overweight when I joined Slimming World in May and i've just reached the 2st mark whilst others who started at the same time/after me are at the 3/4st mark.

A slow loss can be frustrating but fat cells don't just appear overnight so they're not going to just vanish either, think of it as a lifestyle change rather than focussing too much on your weight Smile

I agree with what pp have said. Ultimately if you're eating more calories than you burn, cutting out sweets won't do much. Also bare in mind that sugar isn't just in sweets. It's in your bread, your cereal, fruit juice etc.

Thank you. Im eating 2000 calories or less per day, i do count them. I am just suprised that going from 4000 calories a day to average 1800 I havent seen a significant loss given how overweight i am.

I have cut out all refined and added sugar, I am still eating fruit and carbs.

Firstly: Weight-loss isn't a linear process.

Secondly: Your new diet doesn't sound all that much improved tbh.

Your admission that sometimes you've had pizza or other things means that you are trying but could be doing far better.

Do you do any form of exercise? Even in just the form of walking to and from the shop/train station/park/whatever?

You need to overhaul the whole thing if you want meaningful results.

Flowers that's fab that you have given up sugar. Please keep going with that.

It's a huge misconception that women need 2000 calories per day. Someone whose 5ft 8 doesn't need the same amount as someone whose 5ft 2.

I'm short and to lose weight I need to eat 1200 calories.

How tall are you and how active are you?

vak I'd beg to differ. If someone has cut out lots of sugar, it is a huge improvement!

Sausages /sausage rolls atr foods with the highest saturated fat content. The same goes for cashew nut butter or any kind of butter.
Greek yogurt is also an extremely high fat content, (unless it's the fat free kind). But even with fat free yogurts, they pile them with sugar.

Start to look at the sat fat content of what you're eating. Don't eat your main carbs in the evening if possible. Anything over 5g per 100g of sugar should be considered a high sugar food (e.g. most processed yogurts are 11g and over).

Try switching to tuna steaks, lean chicken, white fish and as much veg as possible. Make your own tomato, veg or butternut squash soup (no cream or olive oil) and have this if you get hungry during the day. Or buy the skinny soups if you prefer.

I gain weight if I eat more than 1200 calories a day.
You've given up refined sugar, but you are still eating unrefined sugar and complex carbohydrates. Nuts, fruit like bananas, and cereals contain just as much sugar. Its just released more slowly and comes with other nutrients.
Dont eat fruit or nuts every day, more like a couple of times a week, and step up your activity levels.

I think it's the carbs tbh, i stuggle with weight and lowering carbs has more effect than sugar intake

Thanks everyone!

How can anyone say that a diet isnt improved by cutting out 2000 plus calories of chocolate, sweets etc per day?!! I honestly think this is a massive improvement.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday I never said that reducing sugar intake wasn't an improvement. I have said that efforts could go further. Sausage rolls and ham sandwiches aren't the beacon of a 'healthy' diet at all - let alone for someone that wants to lose weight.

When I’ve been losing weight in the past I find I have a good week, then an average (if I’m lucky) or bad week where I don’t lose at all. Just remember you’re doing what’s best for you for the long term - don’t be too disheartened by the stats each week.

Good luck!

You are still eating more calories than you need too. You will maintain weight doing this but not lose any.

Cut all the carbs and the weight will fall off. Eat lots of eggs veg protein nuts etc.

I'm not eating sausage rolls and ham sandwiches everyday, it was one example. For example today I had homemade falafels with lots of raw chopped veggies and a small spoon of hummous. Sometimes you need to grab something quick. Also, is 2x slices of wholemeal bread and a few pieces of ham really that bad?! Sausage rolls yes, not good, I agree!

"Your new diet doesn't sound all that much improved tbh"

Vlad, you are incorrect, cutting a huge amount of sugar from a diet, is indeed "much improved", which ever way you look at it! Yes, there needs to be tweets in what is now being eaten, but the lack of 2000 calories of sugar, every day will have made a huge difference to the OP's body. Even if it isn't yet evident in weight lose.
