Why on earth has he come out with that? Very ill advised.

YABU for making me click on a link for the Sun, that beacon of women’s rights.

I don't get a choice about reading the gutter press, I'm afraid. Consider me a clippings service 😄

It’s not false is it? Some people use their sexuality to try and get ahead. Which includes women throwing themselves at rich and powerful men.

Some women were (are) very happy to use flirting & sexual activity to get ahead in the industry. We know that's true, too & always has been. I can see how a simple-minded selfish man would get confused what was ok when and how when making a sexual suggestion.

I don't think anyone is saying that every sexual advance HW did was unwelcome or unrecipricated.

YABU.
You think women never use their sexuality to get the job?
He’s right.

This is the point that I keep going on and on and on about in relation to this scandal.

Weinstein is not just a perv of the first water. He was able to be a perv of the first water because he had far, far too much power to make or break people's careers. And where you have a system where power is so concentrated in the hands of a few, abuse of that power will be rife.

There is a firm connection between the need to have more women in more top jobs in the entertainment industry on the money/power side and the need to close opportunities for people like Weinstein to prey on those so desperate for a leg up they'll get their leg over. While it doesn't have the same gravity or pain as an assault or a rape, those who have been coerced to bed with Weinstein on the promise of a big break role are to some extent his victims also.

Clunes is right. People, including women, use sexual favours to progress.

O/T what is 'first water' ? I've eheard that expression (not being funny)

Well I struggle with the ones coerced into sleeping with Weinstein for a role starring in a film or a big career break. Actng skills would indeed have been needed. He was powerful and abusive but they could have walked out of the situation. However, this could be the tip of the iceberg as the industry has and always had had some very dark secrets.

He’s absolutely right.

OP.....try thinking things through before you announce that someone’s a ”twat”.

"first water" sounds like a mishearing of "first order"...?

Report
MorrisZapp · 27/10/2017 07:58

First water is totally a thing. Heard it many times.

OP, which bit don't you agree with, and why?

Of course some people use sex to get ahead in their life and careers. It is not a new thing.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 27/10/2017 08:01

Actually, I think he’s right.

I also think that women willingly offering sex/sexual activity to get ahead in their career is nothing like women who are not willing being pressurised, assaulted, raped or being blacklisted.

One is consensual & fair to both parties. The other is not.

It happens in every industry, plenty of women prepared to sleep their way to the top.

Yabu. He's right. Some women do use their sexuality to get what they want.

I know it's off the point, but I'm puzzled now. Where do references to "first water" come from? Has the heading been changed?

"First water" is a perfectly normal expression. Dictionary definition of one meaning of the term:

Used to refer to a person or thing that is unsurpassed of their kind, typically in an undesirable way.
‘she was a bore of the first water’

YABU Women do use their looks and sexuality to get men to do things. It's trashy but it's definitely true. Hopefully it's not too many women.
