AIBU?

to think that schools and extra-curricular clubs need to be more careful about Internet security

As Internet safety is such a big thing in schools now, I was shocked to see how much it's possible to find out about a child by putting their name into google.

I never put anything to do with my children on social media but if I was a stranger I'd be able to find out far too much information about my children just by searching for their name.

Surely schools and external clubs should avoid mentioning children by their first name and surname online?

My children's clubs don't mention surnames even in internal messages e.g. team list emails. It's all Jack H, Harry C, etc. I mean, you can work it out, but yes I reckon that's pretty bloody basic!

Why would they be mentioning kids online at all?

I think it's basic - you shouldn't be able to find out which schools a child has been to/is at and which clubs they go to (and therefore when and where they will be at a set time) just by searching for their name.

They don't have permission for photos etc to go online so the details are in things like newsletters.

x-post Jessy. School and club newsletters are put online so if your child is mentioned in the news letter then it's available online.

It's not a big deal for my child but what if the child was in care/adopted?

Just googled my daughter (21 now) and the only reference I can find is with 192.com with my address (she’s moved). I’m not happy about that, but I suspect it’s an electoral roll thing.
Schools and clubs should use first names only.

I've just googled my DS's name and found a famous namesake I've never made a link too AND a really lovely obituary in the guardian for a man who was 'hugely respected at work chairing X committee for the EU and yet could always be found for good company, advice and humour at Y pub of an evening'. Clearly a good name 😃
