Supermarket 'budget' products have vanished

Everytime I go into Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys etc I can never find any value, smart price or basics products! Not that I ever really bought that many, but things like beans, toilet roll, yorkshire puddings, cornflakes etc. Plus I would always pick up a few of these to stick in the food bank trolley at the end of my shop. Have other people noticed this?!

"Not that I ever really bought that many"

Where's the shame if you did. We can't all afford organics

I have noticed this in our Sainsbury's recently. I am very sad that they seem to have discontinued Basics houmous, which was way nicer than the standard stuff. Basics smoked salmon trimmings has now become part of their regular fish range and the price has tripled. Basic diced pork has been rebranded as pork casserole in the same packaging as other pork. Basics baked beans (nicer than standard and lower salt/sugar but no sweeteners) have been relegated to a tiny box on a shelf at the bottom. Etc etc. It almost feels like they are phasing the Basics lines out - it was obviously a sales technique that was of its time and is no longer. It's a shame as it was often a way to get bargains if you knew which ones were good.

I don't actually buy them more because I don't like the taste and normally just buy branded things on offer but actually don't think I've noticed them in a while near me either. Though saying that there always on the very bottom shelf near me so less noticeable.

I noticed this.

Even some of the not-basics have vanished. For example, I used to buy some meal replacement shakes from Asda. Now they don't do them (in my Asda anyway).
Also, there's not much choice on the cheaper cereal or the sauces unless you can spend £££s on the branded (cooking from scratch isn't an option ATM).
It was fairly disappointing.

The Tesco value stuff was rebranded as 'farm produce' so has fake farm names.
There are several different ones for different product lines but Redmere farm is definitely one of them.

Yes. I went to Asda to get ds digestive biscuits for a Greek pudding recipe for Scouts. He told me off (!!) because I didn't buy Smart Price ones, believe me, I did look but there were none. I had to buy Asda Normal Price. There again, at 40 odd pence they were still preferable to the £1 McVities ones Shock

Supermarkets always do this at this time of year. They remove some products to make room for Christmas ranges

They do this before Christmas I've noticed

I'm sure someone will be along to blame brexit shortly.

In all seriousness though I think the pound dropping in value is the excuse the supermarkets have been waiting for to start putting food prices up. Getting rid of their value ranges is just another example.of them doing this by stealth.

Yes I've noticed basics soap, shower gel and shampoo have all been phased out. Use to save a packet on those.

Morrisons value smoked salmon trimmings were great, and I haven't seen them for months now, so I don't think it's about making way for Christmas products. It is annoying.

Here you go: the new names for the budget brands at Tesco:
Vegetables – Redmere Farms
Imported Fruit – Suntrail Farms
Berries, apples and pears – Rosedene Farms
Salad – Nightingale Farms
Pork – Woodside Farms
Chicken – Willow Farms
Beef – Boswell Farms

I think it's partly because it's harder and harder to find decent-sized supermarkets unless you drive out of town to a shopping mall. All the ones near us are "Tesco Express", "Sainsbury's Central" etc, which roughly seems to translate as "small, very limited choice, no basics range, inflated prices". I don't want four equally crap Tescos within a 2 mile radius, I want one decently-sized one with choice!

Chicken – Willow Farms

That was caught up in the seven sisters chicken scandal

I've noticed Tesco doing this but as a PP said they've 'rebranded' it as Redmere Farms and other such names.

The world food aisles tend to be cheaper for certain items depending on what you like to cook.

I bought Asda value passata last week but I'm very confused by their new fruit and veg packaging. I can't work out if it's meant to be cheaper or posher. They craftily put price per kg on some things and price per item/pack on others so it's really hard to compare.

They do it most year around Christmas, though I will say my local tesco didn't get all the usual value products back in this year after their Christmas clear out.

Our local tesco also has decided to get rid off all their bird seed/ fat balls etc in favour of Cat and Dog Christmas presents. Hmm

I don’t buy any of the basic ( apart from oats) or own brand range but I have definitely seen them in my Sainsburys here.

Only thing I can’t find anywhere is really cheap/basics oats anywhere, my rabbit will only eat the cheap ones for some reason she won’t touch the more expensive ones I have tried so many brands. So rabbit has no oats at the moment

That will be me then.

OP it's the glorious Brexit effect.

They stick 'farm' onto the name to make it sound like a better quality product, than it really is. Pisses me off.

Waitrose still do a HUGE number of products in their essentials range. I've not noticed any chance.

I haven't noticed value products but I am saddened to no longer be able to get my floor polish anywhere except amazon for ££'s. The shops say it's because of Christmas stock but I don't believe them.
