AIBU?

changing nappy before car trip

My pet peeve is that I like to think ahead and change my baby's nappy before we drive somewhere. For example, if we go shopping and then are going to drive somewhere else I want to change a wetor dirty nappy even if I have to do it in the back if the car in the car park (if there's changing facilities available I will use them) Otherwise I often or crying most of the way home. Plus I think it's really unfair on baby not to. Yet I get criticised for this. Surely I am not being unreasonable?

Who is criticising you?

Who is criticising you? It was common sense to me to do it.

Husband, but it wouldn't really matter who it was

I always change any nappy before any long journey - less probability of leaks. Poo nappies get changed as soon as safely possible - so not on the hard shoulder but in the next realistic layby.

Changing a nappy takes minutes. What’s the basis for the criticism?

Maybe change the nappy in a changing facility whilst shopping instead of the car? Surely he doesn’t want his baby in a wet or dirty nappy? Confused

Unless it's been done recently anyway that seems sensible to me. The last think you need is a leaked nappy in a car seat when you've got a long journey ahead.

I would imagine the nappy would need changed anyway after driving to the shops and shopping so of course you would change it before you set off again. Your DH sounds lazy.

What's his logic for criticising?

He things his child should have to sit in a wet and/or dirty nappy til you get home? When the alternative is quick and convenient? Why?

Why have you got two threads?

Report

He thinks modern nappies are absorbent so unless it's sodden there is no need to change it until we get home

The two threads started by accident, through pressing the back button on phone, thinking it hadn't posted properly and pressing post again. Then people started responding to both and I wanted to see what they had to say. Hopefully the other one will stop now.

Ah no worries. You can ask HQ to delete one.

How old is baby? And is it you crying all the way home about the baby’s nappy, or the baby?

Unless our ds has very recently been changed and doesn't need a dry nappy, we always change him before we go out. It's so much easier to change a nappy at home than it is to do it in a baby change cubicle I find. I honestly thought that would be what most people would do...

I always change a dirty nappy immediately but would agree with your husband about wet nappies. Ds wears them 12 hours overnight so they must be pretty good. By that logic, if I'm popping to town and then the supermarket, I wouldn't change a nappy. I generally change at meal times

I showed husband the thread and he has seen the light Smile. Thanks everyone who responded.

Your DH is BU. Baby will be uncomfortable in a wet nappy, surely? Plus it'll smell during the journey. Tell him that a great majority of mothers would agree with you.

Dirty nappies I change ASAP, wet I change approximately every 3 hours for hygiene but if it's a disposable and out and about it could be longer. They are very absorbent (last all night) so I don't see the need to change more often plus my LO isn't a very heavy wetter. Would put fresh on before a long journey to prevent leaks.

My son is 5 now but I did exactly the same when he was a baby.

Wee goes cold, imagine sitting in a cold, wet nappy.
