So I put a gold locket on eBay for sale. It cost me £125 when I bought it 2 years ago but i put it on sale on eBay for £40 as I’m really struggling financially. A buyer sent me an offer for £25 ( postage was free for them too) so I accepted as I’m struggling so much for money. She received the item and told me it was crushed during transit ( was perfect when I sent it) and she sent me pictures very angry saying she wanted to return it as it would cost too much money for her to repair although she is gutted because it’s a beautiful locket she said. So i accepted her return request and I had to pay her return postage so I’m already £5.00 and a broken locket down. So I wait a week and didn’t receive the item back so I message her asking her if she’s sent the item and she said no she’s waiting until the end of the month as she’s not printed the return label off and she wants to go and check how much it will cost to be repaired but she didnt say this before the return and am I being unreasonable to expect her to have returned it straight away? Money she paid has been on hold in pay pal. I had until the 25th October to accept her return but I didn’t hang about being awkward I did it same day immediately. And what if she decides to keep the item she got for a very low price I’ve lost out on postage twice and also the money has been on hold pending back to her so will i lose the money and the locket ?

This can be the problem with eBay, happened to a family member. They were able to claim for the loss from the parcel company however - how did you send it?

She’s telling me she’s legally got till the end of the month to return it but if you are so unhappy with the product you would return straight away instead of making the seller wait over 2 weeks. I was hoping to get it back to get my husband to try and repair it himself and I can resell if he can repair to a good standard. She never mentioned that she is looking at getting it looked at for repair she said she wouldn’t pay to get it repaired when asking for a return! I sent it though Royal Mail. This is the last thing I will sell on eBay because I don’t agree with all the fees they charge as well and sellers always get caught out. I only sell things when I need the money really.

Ebay arent a charity. You know the fees when you sign up. TBH I think I'd have sold that down the pawn shop. That aside you are being mugged off by the buyer. it depends how you value your feedback, too much pressure and you will get negged.

I would open a dispute and send the correspondence to ebay to review. It has been signed for hasn't it?

She is probably having it valued then will decide if to return or not

@DunkMeInTomatoSoup I understand they are not a charity and I only sold on eBay thinking I won’t get much for it anywhere else. She opened the return request first thing 17th October so if it was so important for her to Return she would have done so that week but she said eBay legally give her until the end of the month but why should i wait until she decides whether she wants to repair it or not to get it back. Yes it was sighed for.

@letsdolunch321 I think she probably is. I think if you really are unhappy with an item that was damaged during postage you would send it. I never made her wait for the return process to start even though I could have done. Just wanted to get this resolved as quick as possible. Can I still demand her to return it if she changes her mind AFTER she’s started the return process?

Is it possible she has an identical damaged locket and shes going to send you something back that wasnt yours in the first place? I have seen that done before.

Benefit of hindsight, always get the item back to inspect before making any offers.

I would still take out a dispute.

I feel for you, I really do, there are some absolute tossers out there.

@DunkMeInTomatoSoup thank you for your response. The item had a name personalised on it and I assumed she bought it for herself with the same name or for a friend or relative so I know it is the item I sent as I saw the photos but eBay have given her up until the 06 November to return the item even though the request was opened on the 17th October so it just delays the process with her wanting to see the cost of repair and if she changes her mind when she realises it’s worth more than she actually paid I would have waited weeks for the actual money in my pay pal for nothing. It’s a lesson learnt as I won’t be selling on eBay anymore no matter how desperate I am. I asked her if she could just send me the item back now instead of waiting until the end of the month so It gets resolved but she’s since ignored my message.

This sounds absurd to me. I've heard such bad things about ebay that I would never buy or sell on there but that doesn't help you now. When you eventually get it back, if it is damaged, maybe try to sell to a jewellery for scrap gold value. So sorry OP.

Was it recorded/signed for? If so it carries a certain level of insurance I think.

@MyKingdomForBrie

I asked her to send me back the item so I can make a claim against Royal Mail for the damage and she said ‘you don’t have a leg to stand on because you didn’t pack it well and also because you sent it signed for instead of special delivery’

I did send signed for and she said it’s not protected.

Well don’t rely on her for info!! You are covered, up to £50. Look online and start your claim - I assume you have a pick of the damage, and take a screenshot of her refund request.
