I was disgusted when I found my boy got detention because he didn't get enough spellings right in a test. And we worked hard on

Maybe the detention is so he can redo the test.

How old is he? What kind of detention?

I don't think age matters when I was at school you got detention for being naughty and not handing your homework in on time. The words he had to learn were so hard and even as parents we struggle with them.Dont think you should get Detention for not being clever.

Is it actually detention or extra support? If he is struggling to achieve the levels he should be at for his age I can see why the school has stepped in.

No definitely Detention and he does try his very best which all can ask from your children.

not handing your homework in on time.

I sympathise with you OP, and do see where you're coming from.

I wonder if the school told the students before the test that they would have detention if they didn't achieve a certain mark because the school equated not achieving a certain test mark (i.e. passing the test) with the students not doing their homework. I don't necessarily agree with the school's policy, but I can see where the school are coming from if this is the case.

YANBU. Detention is a punishment, and punishment is counter productive to learning.

Who called it detention?

Surely spellings are grouped by ability anyway?

Ds thought he was missing playtime for not doing enough work - after a quick conversation with the teacher he was occasionally missing a few minutes of play for intervention/support work simply as it was the only time it could be done

How old is he and what were the spellings? I am surprised an adult would struggle with them unless dyslexic.

We got a text message from the school your sons in detention and he told us why when he came back.We learn these words spent ages.

In my opinion you don't punish someone for not being so clever

At primary or secondary school?
If he's having such problems then you need to speak to the teacher. It maybe that he's not using the right technique to help him learn them.
Many schools do say if you get a very low mark then it's a detention. It's hard to prove who did and didn't do a spelling test really though as all children are different.

I'm going to the school to discuss this when he goes back.

Primary or secondary?
Does he often have trouble with spelling?
How long did you spend? In one go or several sessions?
How did he try and learn them?
I hate spelling HW! Ours aren't differentiated and are unrelated to the curriculum or the mistakes my child makes in her work.

But apparently they don't teach them words we have find them ourselves. These are words that none of us heard before.I do not wish to discuss what the words were so a troll can use an excuse to pick on me.

Um. I'm not a troll. I didn't ask what the words were. I was trying to help. But I'm not sure I understand your last post.

In secondary school and still getting spelling tests? Poor kid! I thought that was a primary thing. Does he get a list or choose his own (don't put the words!)?
Has he tried look/say/cover/write/check?
Looking for patterns in the spellings?
Making a rhyme or acrostic type poem for the difficult words?
Displaying them around the room?

Are you in the UK OP? UK schools have to give 24 hours notice before keeping a child after school so wouldn’t legally be able to text you and say he was in detention on the same day. I guess this could Be different in an Academy
