To be worried I can't keep down water?

Oh great and helpful mumsnet, our household has been struck by the most horrific D&V imaginable. I've not even been able to keep water down since 3am, I'm 14 weeks pg and feeling quite weak, at what point do I start to get concerned? I know I'm flapping and I'll probably be fine in a couple of days but I feel so weak and drawn I want to make sure baby is ok!

I had something similar when I was 31 weeks pg.

I ended up going to my maternity hospital as I was having increasing painful Braxton Hicks. They dipped my urine and when it came back as ketonic I was given a drop and a bag of fluids. Immediately felt much better.

I would call your midwife/maternity unit and ask their advice. You may need to be rehydrated via drip.

Hope you feel better soon, those bugs are very draining.

Drip not drop!

Be concerned now. Dehydration is a serious risk. Ring your OB's office and see if you can get a callback. I'm in the States. Isn't there a phone number where you can call the NHS and speak with a nurse?

I had a terrible d&v when I was 9 weeks pregnant. The baby will be fine, just try to look after yourself.

I think I ate one slice of toast in 4 days and had half a glass of water.

It was grim. Hope you get better soon Flowers

Thanks for the replies, it's the lack of strength to get up the stairs to the toilet that's worrying me, it's knocked me sideways

Given that you are pregnant it is probably best not to wait it out. Call the out of hours number on your midwife notes and see what they say.

Is anyone in the house well enough to get out and get you some dioralyte? Failing that, my GP reckons that Robinsons fruit and barley squashes are almost as good.

Take small sips, just a couple at a time to start with, as it's easier to keep down small quantities. Gradually increase the amount, but still small sips.

Dehydration's a bitch. I vomit like mad when I get a migraine and in the past have ended up in hospital being rehydrated on a drip. I've avoided that since following the above advice.

If you're not peeing, or your pee is very dark in colour, call 111 for advice.

Maternity triage said 24 hours since last successful food/drink go to A&E. even a tiny sip of water comes back up with a tonne of bile and I've not peed in hours. Poor DH is also wiped out but he can at least make it to the toilet Sad

Call 111

(in meantime) Just hold the water in your mouth, don't need to swallow. Your mouth will absorb it even when the stomach refuses. Small sips (like 3yr old size sips) every 5 minutes.

If you have Dioralyte or any fluid actually-- just sip it and wet your mouth, some will be absorbed through the mucus membranes in your mouth, if you take even a small amount there wont be much to swallow then gradually build it up.
Don't let this continue longer than 24 hours tho. Is there anyone available to help look after you (and your DH)?

I can have similar problems when I have migraine. Try sucking on an ice cube - used to help me. If you are no better in the morning, your GP will be able to test your urine and arrange for you to be admitted if necessary. I'm guessing that you'd have difficulty getting to A&E with both of you being ill.

Just to reassure tyou, I became dehydrated when I was pregnant with DD2 - had migraine practically the whole of the first 12 weeks and suspect that I was dehydrated for longer than 24 hours on more than one occaision. With hindsight, I should have sought help earlier. However, DD2 suffered no ill effects and is now a very normal teenager.

Hope you are feeling better soon. Flowers

DD is going to her grandparents overnight as we're completely unable to parent, it's only the second time she's been away from me overnight Sad

My dad can always take me to the hospital if needed, I'm just so weak

Dehydration can trigger premature labour, so this is very serious. It happened to me when I was 29 weeks with my daughter, and I had been violently ill for 24hrs. Luckily, my contractions stopped after I was admitted to hospital and put on an IV. Please call someone to make sure you and the baby will be ok.

Please phone your maternity unit/midwife. Don't let them fob you off. It already sounds like you need a drip Flowers

Please phone your MAU. I still remember a lady being barked at by a not very helpful midwife when I was in the antenatal ward pregnant with DD (she's 11 now) to get a drink down her despite the poor lady's protestations that she couldn't keep anything down. She was very poorly and put on drips the lot once the docs had seen to her.

Get well soon OP. Flowers

I had the same two weeks ago, at 16 weeks pregnant. I felt absolutely terrible, so drained and weak. Water came straight back up, even tiny sips.
It lasted 24 hours, then I managed to keep water down and slowly food. I did pop in to the midwife for a check up, but she said if it was only a day then I didn't really need to worry.
I hope you feel better soon, and if you are worried, just ring your midwife.

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and last night was vomiting every 15 minutes from 5pm until 3am. I had planned to contact triage today as I had a very fast heart rate and I have a low BP anyway. However from around 6am I have kept fluids down and have just managed some good- so hopefully it will pass for you soon OP. It is so horrendous isn't it. The heart burn is killing me now.

I'm really hoping it'll turn but things are a bit complicated by the fact I have one lung & my respiratory rate has gone up :/

Hospital now. Was only released yesterday because I couldn't keep fluids down. I have hyperemesis but the principal is the same, you need fluids.

If on a drip, remove rings first or they will get stuck.

toolonglurking · 22/10/2017 15:38

Given your update MamaofTwos I think you should call your midwife. If you can't call them, call NHS24 and give them the full picture. Nothing wrong with being cautious.

OP please ring 111 or OOH midwife. I think you need to be seen by a doctor, if you are vomiting so severely that you cannot keep fluids down you are very likely to need an IV drip.
