AIBU?

to think a 10 year old wouldn't be able to set a Facebook account up and bully someone on it?

DS isn’t particularly smart with technology, he does have an iPad that has parental controls, etc.

We also have a downstairs computer.

DS (at the age of 10 - not amazing at technology) couldn’t do that, right? I don’t know many 10 year olds. He says he hasn’t, but someone is saying he has.

Thanks.

Yes he could

Doesn't mean he did, but it's very much possible

Does the person saying that he did have evidence? Or a reason to lie?

Tilapia · 21/10/2017 20:06

I don’t see why not. It’s not that hard?

Angelicinnocent · 21/10/2017 20:06

I don't know, I think if my 70 year old mother who is terrible with tech could, then a 10 year old could.

JonnaSilvie · 21/10/2017 20:06

Do you watch him whilst he's on the computer/iPad?

Tilapia · 21/10/2017 20:06

Parental controls wouldn’t stop him accessing Facebook.

Waitingonasmile · 21/10/2017 20:07

I would say a much younger child could work out how to do it.

tittythatwalk · 21/10/2017 20:07

If he's not amazing with tech, could you check the browser history on the iPad?

GinIsIn · 21/10/2017 20:07

Easily

Wanderwall · 21/10/2017 20:08

I would have thought a 10 year old could do that as well.

NormaNameChange · 21/10/2017 20:08

Pretty sure thats not beyond the wit of most ten year olds... does he have an email account? If he does, check it for confirmation emails etc. Also check the deleted items box - he may not be tech savy enough to double delete if you get my drift...

BloodSplatteredFangs · 21/10/2017 20:08

A 10 year old absolutely could.

Reppin · 21/10/2017 20:08

Of course a ten year old could do that. A much younger child could do it.

Scratty · 21/10/2017 20:09

Are 10 year olds really that tech savvy? 10!?

They only have the messages and it’s under DS’s name. It’s more of a nasty argument than bullying but I wouldn’t be happy if that was actually him.

Of course he could. The average 5 year old could do that now I imagine.

My son at 8 could fix the schools computers and upgrade operating systems. By 10 he could do physical upgrades on pcs.

They are teaching programming at primary school now

MadMags · 21/10/2017 20:09

What??

TheClacksAreDown · 21/10/2017 20:09

10 year old me certainly could have done that if I had today’s Technology. It is hardly difficult.

Scratty · 21/10/2017 20:10

My daughter is 5, she is above average academically and there is no way she could do that!

No email account that I know of. He uses mine for games, etc.

yes, it happened at our school unfortunately, but on a different social media site.

Sashkin · 21/10/2017 20:11

The “setting up the account” part is pretty easy, I’d expect a literate 8 yr old to be able to do it. You just follow the instructions.

Do you mean he wouldn’t be able to get past the parental controls? Does he have access to any other devices, like a friend with a phone, or a computer in the local library?

Your son says it wasn’t him, and presumably you know whether he is a liar or not. But him being ten is neither here nor there.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 21/10/2017 20:11

My 9 year old ds is my go to for all computer problems, he is completely in tune with all things technical. He could do this easily if he wanted. Like he saved my credit card details and spent £100 + on games for him and his friends.....They are far more tech savvy than we realise!

Scratty · 21/10/2017 20:12

Also the messages seemed quite old sounding. I know there is corrective writing etc but DS would normally put u and 2 and stuff like that, he would write you and to or too

Most 10 year olds could register with a site like Facebook and most are capable of typing something mean on it.
Parental controls wouldn’t prevent swear words being sent or rude pics. (Have you set up his Google so it doesn’t show rude images? Many filters struggle with Google images.

Check your son’s history. If he’s browsing incognito then he’s not as computer illiterate as you think.

Scratty · 21/10/2017 20:12

*wouldnt write you and to or too

My 10 year old would be more than capable. Check your browser history? Check his supposed fb page?
