Life lessons - what are yours?

What are your most important life lessons? These could be, for example, things that you've read or heard that have really resonated with you.

(I've recently discovered the 'thought for the day' whiteboard by the Tube at Paddington station, which has definitely inspired some of my life lessons :) )

Mine so far are:

  • time is the currency of life
  • aim before you shoot/look before you leap
  • if you always do the same thing, you'll always get the same result
  • learn how to recognise and work on my own weaknesses.

  • Measure twice, cut once
  • When someone shows/tells you who they are, believe them
  • Nothing good happens after midnight (my dad always said this and he's right)

Failing to plan is planning to fail....
Relevant to all aspects of life
studying....
applying for jobs...
buying a house..
Trying to lose weight...

I used to be last minute.com but I learned the hard way

Efferlunt · 19/10/2017 17:43

Academic stuff only takes you so far. It’s passion and tenacity that gets you places in life.

nightshade · 19/10/2017 17:44

Apply 'sod's law'to everythema decision and you'll not go far wrong...

winterinmadeira · 19/10/2017 17:45

Never make a priority of someone for whom you are only one of their options

ChickenJalfrezi · 19/10/2017 17:47

When force comes from outside, stuff breaks. When force comes from inside, stuff happens. Or something like that.

These are fab - thanks so much, everyone :) the failure to plan one is so true!! Keep them coming please :)

As someone who by nature likes to play by the rules and be accommodating to others, I have learnt that not only can I achieve more by setting aside rules that don't benefit me, but people also like me better for just doing what suits me.

It's not how I think the world should be but it's what works.

Shoxfordian · 19/10/2017 18:18

Two rules

First rule is never tell anyone everything you know

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 19/10/2017 18:29

Don't tread on the toes of those whose feet you may have to kiss tomorrow.

64BooLane · 19/10/2017 18:31

Keep your powder dry.

Never go with a hippie to a second location.

ShitOrBust · 19/10/2017 18:32

it was always "nothing good ever happens after 2 am" for me.

also -
a good education is no burden.
keep your mouth shut.
what goes around comes around.
never say / do / write anything down that you wouldn't want to read about yourself in the Daily Mail.

Neoflex · 19/10/2017 18:32

Always strive to do good by others
But
Don't make others' problems your own

If you're not getting back what you put in then you're putting it in the wrong place

Abuse your body and it will abuse you

Gingernaut · 19/10/2017 18:34

Never trust anyone who says "Trust me."

Fortybingowings · 19/10/2017 18:34

ABC. Accept nothing. Believe no-one. Check everything.

Kitee · 19/10/2017 18:35

The harder you work the luckier you become

And I don’t have a cute quote for it but I’ve learnt never to judge people on first impressions. I have been proven wrong many times.

Figment1234 · 19/10/2017 18:37

Find a job that you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life.

Not sure I've got there yet though!

BeachysFlipFlops · 19/10/2017 18:38

Never go with a hippie to a second location.

I love this.......

Mine is ‘There’s no point having it in your head if you can’t get it out of your mouth coherently’ ......

Boffins at work used to drive me potty as apparently they were ‘so intelligent’ but they couldn’t explain anything to anyone...

SharkiraSharkira · 19/10/2017 18:45

Don't be put off doing something just because of the time it will take. The time will pass anyway. I bloody love that. It inspired me to get a degree as well as many other things.

Don't be afraid to live differently, take chances, go outside your comfort zone. You only get one life!

Don't depend on anyone else completely for anything. If you give someone else that power over your life it can be taken from you. If it comes from you no one else can take it.

BlackPeppercorn · 19/10/2017 18:51

It's ok to be ok.

(Meaning, it's ok to have a job that just keeps you ticking over, pays the bills, gets you by, live in a sufficient rather than luxurious home, drive a car that just needs a MOT, dress high street).

It's ok to be ok. Much happiness can be had whilst others are treading on each other's heads trying to be so much more than OK.

recklessgran · 19/10/2017 19:45

We're here for a good time, not a long time.
Only worry about the things you can do something about.
In the end we only regret the chances we didn't take.
Life has no remote - get up and change it yourself.
Die with memories, not dreams.

Go placidly amidst the noise and haste.

Jigsisaw · 19/10/2017 19:51

If a man says I dont want a relationship, he means 'i dont want a relationship with you'.

Never decide decide not to do something because just you're too old. The time will pass anyway.

MuffinMad · 19/10/2017 19:57

About your children;

They don’t listen to a word you say!
But they’re watching everything you do.

A Dr Phil quote. I’ve not forgotten it.
