To buy leather jacket that doesn't do up

I think leather jackets look awesome. But I am a size 16 with big boobs and anytime I try one I look like a big shouldered, boxy blob. I think they look best on petite, small boobed women - but regularly see people my size or bigger wearing them looking super cool and always wonder if I'm just being over critical of myself or just haven't found the right jacket yet.

Anyway. Just tried one on. It's a 14 as there was no bigger on the rack and I think it looks ok. Fits well on my back and shoulders and is fitted such that you keep some shape. But there is no way in hell I could do it up. I've read this is ok with leather jackets - that doing them up doesn't always look great anyway. But surely I'll just look like I've stuffed myself in something too small?

NC as I have pictures I'm too scared to post but don't want anyone to recognise me with my regular name if I do get the courage!!

DP recently said I should have confidence in myself and wear what I want rather than "motherly" clothes that I think hide me. I think he felt bad that he used the term motherly but he's right. Since gaining weight I've tried to hide. I'm losing now (a stone down but 2.5 stone from my heaviest ever) and wonder if now is the time to go for it. I'm just sick of thinking something looks good til I get home and change my mind.

Is it unreasonable to not be able to do up a leather jacket?

Not unreasonable at all.
If it's that way, or not at all...
Anyway there are lots of clothes we all wear that we don't close all the time. Cardigans for example.
Boobs aren't fat - just a bit of a female you can't squash!
Post a pic please.

I bought a leather biker style one recently too. I always wear it undone because I think it makes me look like a big square box on top if fastened. Its not comfy fastened either. Now I just need to figure out how to get the lapels to lie flat instead of waving about hitting me on the chin. Double sided tape may be needed Grin

withlotsoflove · 18/10/2017 12:25

And think... what would be the point in buying a bigger one?
They need to fitted.

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/10/2017 12:26

I never fasten mine, I think they look much better undone

NurseButtercup · 18/10/2017 12:29

YANBU I completely understand. I've put on a bit of weight and my boobs are huge! I trued on a vintage leather jacket the fit perfect around my back, arms, shoulders but these humongous boobs...

I didn't buy it, for boring practical reasons, I couldn't do fasten it up if it rained. Blush

trixymalixy · 18/10/2017 12:31

I can just about do my leather jacket up but it's a bit neat. I don't do it up and it looks fine, I walkways get compliments on it.

PerfectlyPosed · 18/10/2017 12:32

I've never done up my leather jacket

PerditaNitt · 18/10/2017 12:36

I think they look nice when they are fitted and left undone. They should be nice and fitted on the arms and shoulders so they don't swamp you. I say this because I bought one which did do up, but I never wore it because it swamped me. It is one of the reasons why I don't trust myself to make impulse buys anymore!

Yours sounds perfect - buy it! If it is cold, you can always add a scarf rather than do it up!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/10/2017 12:37

Case in point; Sarah Beeny. Always has her jacket done up and it doesn't do her fabulous figure any justice at all.

Fine! Do it.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/10/2017 12:38

I don't do up my leather jacket either, it would make me feel as though I should also invest in a motorbike and a helmet if I did Grin

Go for it. Do post a pic. Ill-fitting clothes never look good on anyone, big or small but if it fits the way you've described then I think you should be fine.

RosieBucket · 18/10/2017 12:39

It's perfectly fine to have a jacket that won't do up if the plan is to wear it not done up. I have a couple of jackets that don't meet in the middle. I wouldn't wear them in the middle of winter, or when it's chucking down with rain, but if it's purely because you feel good in it, why not?
I know other people who wear jackets that don't fasten up.
It's not all that unusual.

Spaghettio · 18/10/2017 12:39

I have one and have never done it up. If cold I add a big scarf. I’ve had lots of compliments on it and am so glad I bought - I also dithered over whether it was a good idea.

Get it!

Mamadothehump · 18/10/2017 12:41

Go for it!! I’m a size 8-10 and never do mine up!!

RosieBucket · 18/10/2017 12:41

Yours sounds perfect - buy it! If it is cold, you can always add a scarf rather than do it up

Yay, I'd never thought of that!! Cheers! Grin

Buy it!

liminality · 18/10/2017 12:45

You should def look for some babes on insta, there's plenty of girls who are abit bigger and flaunt their stuff - it's amazing! Go check em out for inspo and don't wait til some imaginary time in the future to dress it up - bet your bf will love it

sonjadog · 18/10/2017 12:46

I think it depends. How much does it not do up? Is it a couple of cm or is it 10 cm + ? A couple of cm is fine, but if there is an obvious big gap at the front, then it may look too small.

Jacketornot · 18/10/2017 12:46

Ah thanks for the quick responses. Ok here goes... pics... still a yes consensus?

Jesus I'm embarrassed at myself... it's a bloody jacket not a life changing purchase haha

Looks nice, no need to fasten it.... just wear a big scarf if you're cold. Buy it!

thenightsky · 18/10/2017 12:49

Oh, it is just like mine. I need to train that right hand lapel to lie open. I find it irritates me tickling against my neck. Definitely better not zipped up all rigid.

AntiGrinch · 18/10/2017 12:53

yes that looks great. Go for it.
