Took my horrible dog for a walk to the beach yesterday.

He loves the beach, it's his best thing ever so thought I'd treat him.

How does the little fucker thank me? By finding, and rolling in a rotting seal.

He absolutely stinks.

He's been in the bath several times, we've got fox poo shampoo which hasn't really helped. I tried tomato ketchup. A friend gave me some shampoo she uses on her horses and swears it gets rid of vile smells but he still bloody stinks.

It's making me gag and we've got some friends over tonight

How long is his fur? Can you shave off any claggy fur with clippers?

Sounds daft but are you sure that it's not just the smell stuck in your nose?! Sometimes, I swear I can still smell something vile, even when item has been washed and cleaned up, but it's my smell 'memory'.

I find Fox Poo shampoo works really well on mine (altho she doesn't roll in rotting seals! - you poor thing) but also have used some medicated shampoo on mine for another reason and all I could smell for days, nay weeks, was coal tar! And weeks later, every time she gets wet/damp, the coal tar shows itself again. Might be worth a try as it's very powerful and also good for their skin after a salty sea bath.

I thought it might have been stuck in my nose, but could smell it as soon as I came downstairs this morning.

He's a regular fox poo roller and the fox poo shampoo works on that pretty well, but not really touching the sides.

He's fairly short haired at the moment - only just been to the groomer. The 'stuff' went right through to his skin, and the brand new collar that I'd had embroidered with our details as he kept loosing his tags

I have a Boots chemist up the road so I'll see if they have coal tar soap

Sometimes it's worth calling in a professional. Hand him over to a groomer then go car wash

Empty a packet of bicarbonate of soda over him, followed by a whole bottle of white wine vinegar.

But dont mix bicarb and acid. It causes a chemical reaction, use one or the other.

I tried lemon washing up liquid yesterday, he sort of smelt like lemony dead seal.

I even used DD's expensive shampoo that smells really nice, and some heavily perfumed coconut shampoo

He's pretty co-operative. Sort of resigned, in a hell, it was worth it at the time way

DH has gone out for coal tar soap and bi-carb, failing that, it's a number 1 crew cut

Bad, bad dog.

I know what you mean about a lingering smell. Ddog once rolled in a dead rat that was partially rotten. I could smell it for weeks.

Maybe you need to febreeze the house too. I ended up using 2 bottles of it and I don't actually like the stuff. But it was better than a dead roland.

Ddog have several baths. I think it was head and shoulders apple shampoo that did mask the smell in her in the end. And I had her collar through the wash twice.

I was going to suggest fox poo shampoo but see you've tried that! That normally works for my spaniel when he rolls in something vile. May have to be a trip to the groomers.

Detol or zoflora? Or lavender or tea tree oil rubbed in?

It's definitely from him.

We febreezed and shake & vacced everywhere last night.

I've sniffed everywhere this morning and the smell is coming from him.

DH is back with the soap so fingers cross!

EW! I am so glad my dog hasn't found a rotting seal! (Fox wee was bad enough!). I have heard that cranberry juice is good for this kind of thing - something to do with the acids. Not going to promise though.... Could he have any stuck in his teeth? Perhaps a dentastick or twelve might help.

He flung himself down so his neck and shoulders went in it first, then sort of wallowed.

Febreeze on a some kitchen paper, then rubbed over the offending area. (Frequently through the day) It works for dead (maggoty) buzzard, but dead seal is a new one for me !

Definitely don't use zoflora! It's poisonous! Double check dettol if you're thinking of using that too.

Our doberman had a habit of rolling in rotting fish - it was a dettol job every time.

Rotten seal is the worst. Ddog did that the day before I left him in the care of my now DH for the first time while I went away with work. We ketchup bathed him before I left, but he still smelt so awful that it actually woke DH in the night (he had him sleeping in the same room) and he ended up giving him a midnight hosepipe bath with Head and Shoulders, because that's all he had available to him! It was actually a story in his speech at our wedding

Head and Shoulders helped a bit, as did a new collar. Mostly it was time though. Horrible creatures

You have all my sympathy! DDog would do the same but has not yet found a dead seal. I have a deodorising spray with tea tree and lavender which helps a bit with fox poo, after the shampoo.

1. Don't rinse then sling on loads of ketchup. rub hard. then rinse.
   

1. if only on the body then wash with washing up liquid. Rinse very thoroughly.
   

You might have to repeat this.
