AIBU?

To say that vegans can't really like food?

I mean they don't eat most food so most cooking shows and recipe books are pointless for them. Going out for meals a chore. Birthdays, celebrations, dates... so much of is centred around food which they have to deny themselves and pick around.

I have nothing against vegans and everyone has the absolute right to eat what they want. But trying to cater for a vegan along with other guests is bloody hard work.

Reckon I'll get roasted for this.

Vegans cam eat everything apart from animal products. It's really not that difficult. Just takes a bit of thought.

No, there is some delicious vegan food. Do you think non vegan must hate all animals?

You clearly know bugger all about vegans or vegan food so no wonder it is so hard for you to cater for them....

I'm not vegan, I'm vegetarian but most restaurants now offer (a limited) choice and supermarkets are starting to offer some really good vegan quick or prepared options if you strugggle to cater for your vegan friends but otherwise vegans don't struggle to feed themselves so not an issue.

My Dad is a "vegan" and it does my bloody head in. Finding places to eat is a nightmare and he makes a bloody song and dance about it all the time. He's doing it for health reasons apparently. Thing is he still takes milk in his tea Grin.

I get why people are vegan I just find it too restrictive. The vegan substitutes are pretty nasty.

It's not just excluding meat from the first but pasta, cheese, milk products etc

YABU, obviously. What is with all the vegan hate? Don't associate with vegans if they annoy you that much that you begrudge catering for them.

What animal does pasta come from?

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 13/10/2017 21:09

Most shop bought pasta is vegan I think? It's only wheat and water.

i was vegan for 10 years and my food was fantastic, full of flavour. Everyone loved it. i never even told any of my guests I was vegan and they didn't guess.
I'm vegetarian now but it's all down to imagination and flair. Meat eaters eat crap, boring food too if they don't make an effort.
There are a billion dead easy recipes on the internet for animal free people you'd have to be really lazy and unimaginative to find them nothing to eat at all.
If I'm inviting people to my home I'll do my darned best to make sure they are happy and catered for whether their food preferences piss me off or not. It's just plain good manners.
If you don't like vegans, why invite them at all?

Non-egg pasta is vegan.

Report
DrRisotto · 13/10/2017 21:09

There's egg in it

Dried pasta usually doesn't have egg.

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 13/10/2017 21:10

Probably because some pastas contain eggs, but not all of them do. Dried pasta like Barilla's don't.

As a former vegan I would say that there are lots of bloody lovely dishes that you can cook and eat which don't contain animal products. Meat and dairy aren't necessary for tasty food...and I say that as someone who now eats both but...
Veg curry, veg chilli, roasted vegetables, cous cous, noodles, wraps- loads of dishes we eat regularly that are delicious if cooked properly and are vegan. Veg food doesn't have to be boring. Veganmonicon is a fab cook book if anyone us interested in tasty vegetarian food.

I'll be honest, I thought exactly the same as the OP....
Until my dd became vegan. She has made meals and baked cakes that of have no idea were vegan, absolutely delicious food. Vegans can eat just a wide and varied diet it seems whilst omitting animal products. I've been amazed.
Not amazed enough to become vegan myself but still amazed !

Massively unreasonable. I love food, cook from scratch the majority of the time, enjoy playing with different flavours and textures, exploring different cuisines. I just do not wish to exploit animals in the process, is all. It’s much less of a barrier than you think.

I have a friend who is a vegan and also doesn't eat gluten. I detest cooking for her.

As a vegetarian, I don't feel as if I'm 'denying myself' by not eating meat. I'm never even tempted by it. It's pretty much in the 'non-food' category for me now, after almost 20 years without eating it.

I imagine vegans feel the same about their dietary choices. If you find them really difficult to cook for, why not ask them to bring along a dish? I've been asked this before and had no problem with it.

Make vegan for everyone instead of one separate dish if it's that annoying?

Most shop bought, dry pasta doesn't have egg in it. It's just wheat and water.
