Sitting in kitchen / diner at wknd I thought i heard crashing about but thought it must be from outside. Tonight i went downstairs and as day there is SOMeTHInG crashing about - i can't see it but it sounds like it wants to get out. It was so loud - next door had rats please tell me it can't be them.... are rats in walls / ceilings that loud and how the hell did they get in there???!!! Urrrrrrhhhhhh i am freaking out. 😭😭😭

My hamster got under my bedroom floor once, i knew because i was downstairs and could hear really loud scratching from the dining room ceiling. We thought it was a rat, my dad nearly clubbed the poor guy to death when he took up the floorboards. He's done it twice again since, i know as soon as i hear the incredibly loud scratching.
Sadly to say yes, it probably is a rat or mouse, they can get through very tiny holes or chew their way in.

Could be a bird but I'm sorry to say it does sound like rats. I'd be straight on the phone to the pest control tomorrow first thing if I were you they will be able to tell pretty much straight away if it is and I'm sure it won't take long to deal with them if it is

Oh god. Yep i think rats / mice. Fuckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will call pest control first thing. Not sure what they will have to do to get them out of the walls though? Is that going to be a big job? Aaaaaargh im too scared to sleep now just have visions of them chewing cable and setting the whole place on fire. I've left all the lights on i just ran out of the room when i looked at the open fireplace and the noise got louder. Shit shit shit. Aaaaaaaaaabhhhhhhhhhhhjjjjjjj

No need to panic. They’ll just lay traps/place poison. Please don’t let them use sticky traps, they’re inhumane.

They won’t set your house on fire overnight, I grew up on a farm with plenty of mice and no cables were ever chewed!

@mykingdom im sure its rats because our new neighbours politely informed us they have / had them and im sure mice wouldn't be so loud - it was really like a bull in a china shop sound, really startled me. How will the pest control lay traps if they are in the walls though? Does this mean the traps lure them out?!?!!!!

Can I just say as well, the crashing around sounded frantic like they wanted to get out. I am not ok with this - not good with rats / mice at all. Would love to bleach kitchen incasw theyve been in there but too scared to go in now!! People with cats - does the smell of cats put them off? We were going to get one soonish but now i want the cat yesterday

I thought we had an elephant in the loft once. I settled for the common sense option of it likely being a rat. I was as impressed as you are, but decided to go and have a look. It was a baby bird & a parent bird on the roof going batshit at junior.

MyKingdomForBrie · 11/10/2017 01:46

Well they will work out where they are entering/leaving and lay poison/traps there. Are you sure it’s not a bird though? Panicking/crashing doesn’t fit with rats.

QuestionableMouse · 11/10/2017 01:50

Get a grip woman. They're not going to hurt you.

Crashing and banging sounds more like a bird in the chimney than rats.

SeaToSki · 11/10/2017 01:54

Rats and mice are generally scratchy and scuttly, it sounds like you have something that is panicking and blundering around, a lost bird sounds much more likely

Potentially could be a bird but then why would it only make noise at night? I noticed some little burrows in the garden today as well urrrrrrrgh. Calling pest control first thing - anything live in my house not invited needs to die or move asap. Cannot believe this - rats crawling in my ceilings potentially. Ffs.

@sea that's what im thinking but it was more like steady motion tapping back and forth just sooooo loud. Not sure if rodents having organised chaos or a bird

You need two bottles of wine and it will solve your problem.

Down both bottles and then you will either:

A) be brave enough to go and pick a fight with the rat pack
B) get pissed, pass out and wake up tomorrow in time to call pest control

We had a squirrel in our attic once and I swear it sounded like the hounds of hell were up there. I made my DH nail the attic hatch shut until the pest control man came out, because i was convinced it was a giant mutant murder-rat coming to kill me...

I get mice pretty often (live in an old house in the countryside) and they sound incredibly loud sometimes. These are only field mice which are a lot smaller than normal ones, too. Pest control will put poison down and it usually takes two or three goes to completely sort mine out.

The good news is that mine have never made it out of the walls/attic into my actual house. Hopefully yours won't either.

I've had a squirrel in the loft, fuck me, the noise it made. Dd was convinced it was a demonic presence. We didn't know whether to call a priest or pest control 😏

They make a racket (I couldn't believe it) and once in can go under floors , up inside walls and into your attic. Call pest control before they start nibbling your wiring like ours did. Calll local council pest control ours were great at sealing up a few breaches of the brickwork and putting poison down

My dcs are with their dad and this was meant to be my 'quiet time' unpacking and relaxing. Ho ho ho! Now I'm in bed alone drinking while the creatures take over downstairs. This is so depressing 😭Thank god for wine, my electric blanket and fluffy leopard print pyjamas - small pleasures. The pest control man looks very attractive on his website profile picture. And no im not drunk yet this is just a casual observation.

Wait for the smell a few weeks after pest control has been. Ugh it's vile. We get them at work as old building.

Laying poison will only result in dead carcasses rotting in the walls.

I've had critters running around in my roof the whole time I have been living n my house (8 years) and never set traps for them, they have never burst through the walls into the house either. Don't overreact.
