Vegan coming to stay

amyxo · 09/10/2017 15:43

My friend is coming to stay for 2 weeks, she is a vegan. Would you buy all the vegan cheese and butter and soy milk etc and different food stuffs for her stay? Or would you take her to the supermarket so she could buy it herself?

Yes I'd get them in.

I would talk to her and ask her how she wanted to deal with it!

Ask what she would like to have in, see what she says. If I want something special I usually bring it myself.

I think if you're close enough to be okay with her coming to your house to stay you're close enough to ask her directly about it?

watching cos I too have a vegan coming to stay. Doesn't really do the vegan cheese. So lost on what to cook!

why not get the basics in, ie the butter and but milk- get in enough for breakfast/lunch and then discuss how to handle

some menu ideas

Lentil dal and rice
Pasta and tomato sauce
lentil veggie pie
Veggie stir fry
Cauldron sausages and mash

try it OP!

Depending on how au fait you are with what she normally has I would either get them in, or ask her what you should get in for her. If you go with the second option she may offer to bring her own (I probably would depending on logistics).

I would just get her her usual vegan milk and then take her with you to buy the rest.

Yeah I would ask her what she would like as she may not like certain milks / may drink black tea and so it will be wasted.

If I could afford it I would buy some stuff - but would probably ask her first.

Ask her what she'd like you to get in or offer to take her to the supermarket when she arrives (whatever she'd prefer) - most supermarkets have vegan friendly products.

Two weeks is a long stay so you will need the full run of things. Taking her with you to the supermarket is a good idea. Is she going to be eating with you most evenings?

You definitely need to ask her, as vegan milks/cheeses etc vary and not everyone likes all of them! Find out what she usually has, and discuss meal ideas.

Actually, having re-read, I would cook mostly vegan for the two weeks she is there so would get things in for meals, but ask her re: milk and snacks etc. You don't want to buy a load of soy milk and find she prefers almond, for example.

More ideas for OP and booloobalooloo:
Sweet potato and courgette fritters with naan bread and mango chutney
Black bean burgers and chips
Nut roast and roast veg
Various vegetable soups
Kung Pao Tofu with mushroom fried rice
Falafel or falafel burgers
Mushroom pasta
Caramelised onion and green veg tart
Vegetable tagine and couscous

Jacket potato and beans, no butter - done!

Only kidding. I wouldn't go getting a whole load of stuff in; just because it's vegan doesn't mean your guest eats it or even likes it, which can be a bit awkward if you've got it in specifically for them. Maybe a tub of margarine for starters.

definitely ask her first.

I'm a lapsed vegan, and wouldn't touch vegan cheese or quorn for example - but everyone's different.

& when it comes to milk alternatives there's loads - soy, rice, almond, oat etc.

Some great recipe suggestions above. We had a simple vegan lentil soup for lunch, made from an onion, a carrot, garlic, potato, red lentils, veg stock powder, leftover passata and it was yum.

Ask her in advance, or take her along on the shopping trip. :) Some brands of dairy substitutes are truly disgusting so she may have a preference, or she may avoid them entirely and eat / drink things that don't involve substitutes, e.g. taking tea and coffee black.

IF I was vegan, I wouldn't rock up to stay at a friends house for two weeks without bringing my own supplies or planning to do a shop when I got there.

Maybe get some milk and something to make a snack when she gets there (doesn't have to be vegan specific) and take it from there.

I'm assuming there are shops nearby or home shopping options?

I agree with pp I would talk to her about getting stuff in as she will have preferences and know what tastes better. She may offer to bring things and if not I would get them in. But it's better to get things that will get used

No, most of them are rank and she will have her favourites. I might ask her what milk alternative or spreads, if any, she wants. Get in peanut butter. And maybe oreos. And then just cook foods avoiding dairy, rather than using alternatives.

scissors and spice do an amazing rhubarb and lentil curry. It's amazeballs (and I'm not vegan!).

I'd get enough in for your first day/ evening and then do a shop after.

Or, text her saying "I'm doing an online shop, what milk do you want?" and taken it from there.

Just ask!

Report
kaytee87 · 09/10/2017 16:18

I would just buy it all and eat it myself for those two weeks.

Report
BlueButTrue · 09/10/2017 16:18

I would 100% buy whatever she wanted/needed but you should certainly ask as Vegan diets vary hugely.

For example, one Vegan may not touch almond milk but love soya milk instead.

Or one may not touch vegan cheese and another may add it to everything
