Just watched Rain Man - AIBU to have found it a bit upsetting? Found it quite difficult and uncomfortable to watch at times.

I just found it really sad and uncomfortable. Maybe it was just because I was feeling a bit low. It's not exactly a feel-good film anyway - it's quite upsetting in places.

Why did you not like the accountant?

I just felt like the message was basically 'if your child is autistic, just ignore the autism and refuse to give in to it, send them to martial arts training and eventually they will grow out of it and become successful and 'normal' but for a few OCD traits'.

I have trouble expressing exactly why I hate it so much, I just do. I think because my ds is severely affected to the point of being doubly incontinent and likely needing full time care for the rest of his life so the inference, even unintentional, that if I treated him that same as everyone else and didn't pander to his autism then he would magically grow out of it extremely offensive and upsetting not to mention massively unrealistic.

I think it's a great film and the fact that it's upsetting is because in so many parts it's real.
I hated the decade of 'oh like rain man! ' that followed where so many people assumed that that was how autism manifests itself every time.
I think Tom Cruise should have got the oscar rather than Dustin even though I love Dustin
His recognition that he loved his brother but could not make him happy was perfect

Tom Cruise is such a good actor, although such a screw up as a human being.

The real rain mans biography - Kim Peek - is excellent and more impressive for me than the film. Rain man is a curse, no my son does not have a amazing ability but I have found less comments are made as more autism awareness increases.

Thanks to that film a lot of people think everyone with ASD has to have a 'gift'.

I just reply when asked what my two's special gift is "They can fly" Grin which seems to let them know that they've asked a stupid question and I'm not impressed.

SharkiraSharkira - see, I loved the Accountant because my little brother is autistic (high functioning) and loved it so much - someone with his diagnosis (ish) kicking ass and being the cool hero. It just thrilled him to bits and I loved it for that.

If you view them as simply what they are - films - then they are both exceptionally good. They're not public service broadcasts or documentaries, and artistic license is in both of them in spades.

What about X & Y, -does that affect you negatively as well?
