AIBU?

to think I will never lose weight?

I'm hoping someone can reassure me that losing 4 to 5 stone is still do-able when I am such a picky eater and super busy with a full time job, university course and child?

I eat too much junk and I'm a really bad cook. Seriously, I don't even know what most labels mean and leave it to DH who works two jobs so it's mostly take outs or ready meals for us.

I hate all fish except haddock. I don't like pasta or pizza. I hate most veggies unless in soup and even then it's only some soups. (I bought two soup makers and neither of them worked even with instructions and asking on help on here so I can't even make fucking soup. I feel pretty useless)

I don't like much fruit, except apples, satsumas, strawberries and grapes.

I hate salads - there's no taste and I don't like seasonings/dressings.

No seeds or nuts (except peanuts). No cheese, quorn.

DH hates fish, eggs, nuts and anything with a visible bone.

I love chocolate, chips, chinese food, fast food basically

I can't get to a gym time wise so I keep saying I'll try the likes of the 30 day shred but then work, study, and entertaining DD just takes over.

My uni used my old student photo for my 'new' card. They said I didn't need to send a new photo because they already had one and I stupidly agreed only to get a card through with a young, skinny, pretty me. What will shops etc think when I'm requesting a discount? Who is this woman in this card? Has she stolen the card?

I have in the past, tried and failed at SW, nutricheck, cambridge, hypnotherapy, myfitnesspal also tried and failed at gyms, zumba, yoga, pilates, personal training, using fitbits.

I did lose 2 stone through WW about 3 years ago but then WW changed their diet and there was nothing I liked to eat.

Is there any way in which I can lose weight whilst not eating food I hate?

Unfortunately you might be right and not be able to lose weight.

You have to be in the right mind set to do it. You have to really want it and you have to work hard to make it happen. A negative approach won't work.

Looking at everything you have said, I don't think you will able to lose 4 to 5 stone, no.

Hmmm, it will certainly be more difficult with all the food you won't eat because unfortunately many of them are weight loss foods. All I can suggest is cutting out all chocolate, crisps etc.
Maybe give intermittent fasting a try and skipping breakfast daily. Honestly though you need to try and eat those foods , at the very least the eggs, vedge, salad, nuts , lots of fresh meat and cut back on the carbs such as chips.

Don’t follow any weird and wonderful plan that’s designed to make money

Just eat a calorie deficit

You eat less calories you will lose weight

Don’t set the deficit so drastic that you can’t stick to it long term

If you track calories u can eat whatever you want, obviously vegetables are low in calories so it is good if u can eat lots of them, but if u want a pizza u can without guilt that you have broken the rules of your diet which often leads to quitting. If you lean to higher protein choices you’ll feel full for long and not experience sugar crashes

And if you have time weight training to preserve your muscle

You could find a bunch of food that you DO like and make a menu and stick to it.

But really..It doesn't matter what you like OP....if you want to be healthy you have to grow up and eat your vegies.

You won't lose weight unless you really want to and are committed to it. You also have to believe that you can do it. If you start your weight loss journey in the defeatist state of mind you're in then no, I fear you will never lose weight.

Can you lose weight if you change your mindset? Absolutely.

And don't buy things like "soup makers" whatever they are!

You don't need a maker to make soup!

Unless you have actual issues with tastes and textures I don't believe you don't like everything you say you do. Do you actually
cook anything? If not I think you should learn.

As for losing weight the key for me was to stop with the faddy diets and just realise that the less you eat and the more you exercise the more weight you lose. Try. Calorie counter like MyFitnessPal.

With that many excuses you're right. You have to want to do it. Do you ever watch tv? Or sit and mumsnet for 30 mins? Then you do have time for the shred DVD.

I could tell you that you will still lose weight, but how will that help?

As fair says, until your head is in the right place you will not lose weight - you need to have to want to lose weight, more than you want the piece of chocolate, pizza or fast food.

What did you eat when you were slim, what changed and what can you do to get back there?

Maybe now is the time to change your mindset. I think you've got 2 choices, accept your weight and unhealthy food choices and carry on as you are. Or suck it up and start trying new foods and eating foods you don't enjoy, you never know, you may start to like them. Go to the BBC good food website, pick some quick and easy healthy recipes and give it a go. Lose the mindset of I don't like it so I won't try, I will fail so I won't try. That will get you nowhere.

Believe me, I've been in your shoes. The hardest bit is changing the way you think. Once you get passed that (it takes perservence) it gets a lot easier

You need to change what you like. Find healthy foods you enjoy the taste of.

Can I be brutally honest here. You need to think of your child and eat those healthy things so they grow up healthy , or you are setting them up for an unhealthy life that you currently lead.
Let that be your motivation

If you like Chinese food, can you start by learning to do a stir fry? You can get stir fry sauces and just add them to meat and veg. You could then try introducing new vegetables to your palate and get yourself to tolerate them, even if you never learn to love them. My tips for stir frying - cut everything up into the same sort of size before you start cooking, start by adding in meat, then denser veg like carrots and broccoli and then quicker cooking veg like mushrooms, peppers, courgettes. Keep it all moving.

I think concentrate on introducing new healthier foods to your diet and getting used to them. Then you've got more to work with.

Do you like jacket potatoes, rice, noodles etc? How about Mexican food? Chilli con carne is easy to make and reasonable on calories.

Do lipotrim. It's amazing.

Well, what do you hate more, eating more healthily or being fat?

Look again at WW, because you mention "their diet" and they don't actually have one. You "can" eat pretty much anything, but you have to make choices and keep within a reasonable point count. (Or do their other plan, which doesn't involve counting points).

Look, I know it's hard. I've just lost a stone in 6 weeks and I have another 2.5 to go. I've faffed about for years, getting slowly bigger and bigger and not sufficiently motivated to do anything about it. I'm now truly in the zone and every pound off is a triumph. It's lovely to be able to comfortably zip up trousers that were a squeeze just two months ago.

But I agree with others. You MUST change this defeatist attitude if you don't want to be overweight for life.

Your palette changes as you get older, you might find you like some of those foods now if you retry them.

And I must say, nothing puts you off a second glass of wine more than knowing how many calories/points it has.

You seem to feel like you have a lack of control over your eating habits, of course you can lose weight, of course you can follow a diet but it won’t work with that attitude. You need to feel ready and take control for it to work. It’s not rocket science, move more, walk more, eat less crap. There is no reason why it won’t work for you.

Report
Puddlesy · 07/10/2017 12:04

First off you need to stop saying "I don't like x".
For instance you can't say I don't like salad when there are so many definitions of "salad". By declaring you don't like it, you're not even willing to engage and frankly you won't lose weight by refusing to eat anything that isn't a take away if that is what you want.

You also don't need soup makers. A pan and a blender does the job.

Take aways generally aren't quicker than cooking. For instance we had a pizza last night. Took the best part of an hour between ordering and getting it.

What things DO you like?

Report
Crunchymum · 07/10/2017 12:08

You do seem to have a defeatist attitude OP.

I say this as someone who has a similar amount to lose (well I will do once I'm no longer pregnant)

Use MFP and log everything you currently eat. Start to make to swaps.

So small brown bread (some are 55cals a slice) as opposed to thick white bread.

Wholemeal rice - potion controlled - as opposed to white rice.

New potatoes as opposed to jacket or roasted potatoes.

Veg in things is easier than plain veg so add it to your Bolognese / chilli

Try stir-fries. Quick and easy and can be very healthy.

Stop with any junk. Throw out the crap and if you want a snack have a banana or some peanuts or some Philadelphia on a few crackers.

Drink lots of water and limit booze and fizzy drinks. Always drink before you eat.

It may fall on deaf ears though as you don't seem to be saying "I want to change my lifestyle". You seem to want someone to offer a quick fix or tell you a way to eat crap and get slim.

You just need a calorie deficit, as another poster has pointed out. You will lose weight. It's just harder. Most of the foods you like are calorie dense but don't fill you up for long, e.g two chocolate bars might have the same calories as a big piece of salmon, some potatoes and veg, but they won't fill your belly and will make your blood sugar go crazy, so it will take a lot more will power. But you can lose weight eating rubbish if you want to.

Report
Puddlesy · 07/10/2017 12:10

And avoid faddy nonsense diets. They might wotk short term but are you really going to spend the rest of your life having a milkshake or lunch or not eating carbs?

If you do need the support of a group or the guidelines set out by a "diet" then look at what works for you. You say WW was successful so in that case calorie counting might work. Take a look at MyFitnessPal.

If you're a "really bad cook" you can do something about that for starters. Never has education been so accessable is it is now; you can learn anything from YouTube videos, including how to cook. You just have to want to do it. Cooking doesn't have to be hard, it really doesn't.

Fussy eating is obviously a big problem as apart from the weight issue you are showing a poor example to your child and are playing Russian Roulette with your health. So try and find a way to like more foods. If it's texture, try a different way of preparing it. If it's taste then keep trying it because it can take a few attempts to learn to like certain flavours.

LaurieMarlow · 07/10/2017 12:15

You really need to re-educate your palate and teach yourself to like good food. You honestly can't just sit there and say 'all I like are chocolate, chips and takeaways' and expect to be taken seriously.

Why not look at some healthier 'fakeaway' recipes and try something out as a starting point?

And you absolutely can make soup and you certainly don't need a machine. It's usually as straightforward as sauté some onions, then add whatever veg you're using and sauté that briefly. Then simmer in vegetable stock for 30 mins or so. Blend and thin to taste - add any herbs you fancy.

I know exactly how you feel. I hate all fruit and veg and I cant bear the sanctimonious cries of 'grow up and eat it' I have actual issues with the taste and texture and no matter how I try just cant do it and there seems to be no support at all for my issues people just think you are a lazy fat slob
