to choose a not so gorgeous cat?

I want a cat/kitten - I could look after it well, and give loads of snuggles. I've looked at rescue cats/kittens and they are all so cute.
Years ago I met a perfectly nice woman (I thought) who had a Siamese. She told me she was driving, saw this kitten on a wall, and just took him. No, we didn't become friends.
I also met someone who stole a Burmese, and someone who stole a Bengal.
(I know some lowlifes, but they don't seem so: appear ordinary people).
My household is open - doors, windows; my cat will be an outside cat?
So, get an an unprepossessing cat? They're all gorgeous!

If you’re thinking of allowing the cat to wander around the neighbourhood then you’ll have to be prepared to potentially lose it. Cars, evil people, getting lost, dogs can and do account for missing cats. I had two killed on the road and one go missing never to be seen again. It’s heartbreaking.

Please consider confining the cat to the garden with cat fencing brackets to prevent escape. If you can’t confine to the garden or yard then I wouldn’t bother getting one, or get an older one who’s not bothered about going walkabout.

I’m on my third cat. My previous two were with me 14 and 16 years and died of a tumour and kidney failure respectively. Current one is five. I believe very strongly in a cat’s right to roam. If I didn’t feel confident about letting my cat out, I would have got an FIV+ one that couldn’t go out. Please don’t restrict your cat’s movement. If cats could choose they would choose to be out.

I know a couple of cats around my place and I've been seeing them for long years. They are all very cute and gorgeous and nobody has stolen them so far. They all walk free and sunbathe here and there.

YANBU. Unfortunately not everybody is nice. It's bad enough to have a phone or wallet stolen. Must be heartbreaking if it's a pet.

I've always chosen the 'underdog' (undercat?) from the rescue centres: the one who's been there the longest and who nobody wants. In return I've had the most wonderful companions who lived out their lives in comfort and love.

Last year I adopted a 13-year-old black cat, who I suspect would still be in his cage if I hadn't taken him. He purrs at the sight of me, curls up against my back in bed, and even sits beside the bath when I'm in it, waiting for me to get out.

Yes, an ordinary cat- as far as their is such a thing. A rescue cat. Just a cat. No one needs the royalty of the cat world- that would be too much!

I didn't know black cats aren't wanted so much. All our cats have been rescue cats and have lived long and happy lives, roaming about.
But do take a look at the older cats, so many people want young cats and the oldies get overlooked.

Thanks DM - She is a rescue cat also. She was a stray who was taken in my CP when she was heavily pregnant. Once she'd had the kittens we gave her a home, that was a bout 2 years ago. Her name is Pippa ❤️

Black cats stay in shelters longer than any other colour. Partly it's the ridiculous superstitions, partly because they don't photograph well so don't stand out on websites etc, and partly because they're not as eye-catching IRL as bright gingers or tabbies or whatever.

My neighbour has six cats they do roam but not very far usually my garden and the kids trampoline rhey sometimes come through an open window if i leave it open i have a puppy now so not so much now tbh!

If you have a garden that can be securely cat proofed, you should get a cat that's stuck in a shelter because fiv or a missing leg or something like that - I ended up with my cats because they had health problems and no one want them Dont regret it for a second, they always make me happy no matter how bad of a day I've had!

I’ve always had rescue cats, we currently have 2.

Milo was originally an indoor cat as we lived on a busy main road and the RSPCA wouldn’t let us have him otherwise. We were renting a big house which he had full roam of so didn’t do too badly. When we moved he became an outdoor cat very easily.

I’ve been lucky to never have a cat stolen or killed by a car, I hadn’t realised cat theft was so common TBH.

I didn't know black cats were hard to rehome I've always loved black cats. Sadly my old ginger boy is too old to put up with an interloper and wouldnt put up with a newbie.

My black cat is an old ill lady now.

we got her instead of a rescue was because the owner of the mother couldn't cope and had threatened to drown them all so I took her home and found homes for another two anyway she was the runt of the litter and was a ugly wee thing (who I thought was stunning and fell in love with her) but out of them all she turned into the most beautiful cat!

My point is you can't really tell how an animal is going to look once it's grown up or which arse hole is going to like an animal and steal it.

i work at a cat rescue and potential adopters fall into two camps, the people who go straight for the pretty tabbies and gingers, and the people (who we love) who say i want a black cat or a black and white one because everyone overlooks them, and while its true the pretty colours go faster the black ones are not far behind because they usually have awesome personalities to make up for it, and we have rehomed loads of oldies too even up to 16 year olds
