Hartley Hare and Pipkins - am I the oldest Mumsnetter in the world?

There is another thread where a chaperone gave a child with SN a toy rat to keep them quiet. I read the thread and was appalled and yet comforted by the pictures of the rat. Didn't want to hijack that thread but it reminded me of Hartley Hare, who was a terrifyingly bad puppet in a kids show in my youth. The show was called Pipkins I think and included Topov the Monkey and a tortoise, whose name I can't remember.

Am I the oldest and/or most disturbed MNer? As, while Hartley terrified me he also brought joy to my heart because he was such a bad little shit! I think 70s kids TV may have been dominated by people on some sort of recreational substances to be fair.

I used to love Pipkins.
Hartley was truly terrifying though grin

I think it used to be on at lunchtimes because I only remember watching it if I was off school sick, or during the holidays. I'm not sure how I got away with it because I'm sure it was ITV and our house was definitely a BBC only house!!

I loved pipkins. Does anyone remember humphrey cushion? Can't remember the name of the programme...

IamEarthymama Wed 04-Oct-17 15:35:09

Hell, yes!
I had blocked that memory, it was terrifying 😳
I remember Listen with Mother on the radio when Mam and I had an afternoon nap before we had a TV so I am the oldest MNer!!

Wasn’t Humphrey cushion in Hector’s House?

Hartley was indeed terrifying.

I remember Pipkins. But I preferred Fingerbobs.

Nah you are a youngster compared to me, I remember Watch with Mother, Andy Pandy, The Flowerpot Men & Pinky&Perky.
I think my oldest watched Hartley Hare, definitely Rainbow & the one on a barge? Crikey I really am an old gimmer.

Hartloooyyyy... I want some chocolate cake!!!!!!!!!

WingMirrorSpider Wed 04-Oct-17 15:37:06

My mistake, it was Hickory House. Hector’s House was the one with Kiki the frog.

Wasn't it called Inigo Pipkins before it was called Pipkins? I can remember singing that overandoverandover. IIRC the words were "Inigo Pipkins it's Inigo Pipkins". And there was a pig that sounded suspiciously like Amy Turtle from Crossroads.

Please don't tell me I've dreamed it up!

Hartley Hare looked like a grubby, louse-ridden pervert who would most likely be on a register somewhere.

Where they all lived (was it a shop?) looked like it needed a good clean to me. It disturbed my 4 year old self greatly.

It didn't disturb me as much as Animal Kwackers though. That programme upset me for ages.

WingMirrorSpider Wed 04-Oct-17 15:38:10

Yes! Peeeg the Brummie pig grin

MrsJayy Wed 04-Oct-17 15:38:14

Hartley is truly terrifying i remember crying when he was on i rememberNana saying but he is a nice rabbit jay no he was not he was a creepy fecker<shudder>

WingMirrorSpider Wed 04-Oct-17 15:40:27

Actually the one that still gives me the heebie jeebies even now thinking about it is Potty Time. Incredibly sinister (probably actually v. tame but my 4 yo self couldn’t handle creepy puppets).

FreudianSlurp Wed 04-Oct-17 15:42:14

Thank you Wing!

As we all seem to be a similar age, was anyone else taught to cross the road by Tufty the squirrel? None of this new-fangled Green Cross Man stuff, oh no, a rodent taught me!

MercianQueen Wed 04-Oct-17 15:42:45

"My name's Pig and I'm hungry" is a favourite refrain in this house.

Loved Pipkins.

Hartley was a mangey, flea-bitten creep of a hare though.

FreudianSlurp Wed 04-Oct-17 15:43:01

I loved the fleas in the sand on Potty Time.

EastMidsMummy Wed 04-Oct-17 15:43:18

The name of the tortoise was Tortoise.

StoatofDisarray Wed 04-Oct-17 15:43:29

Hartley was horrible. The whole shop looked like it stank of damp carpet, mould, dog hair, fag smoke and grease. And patchouli. I HATED Pipkins.

cleanasawhistle Wed 04-Oct-17 15:46:05

I loved Pipkins too......last year I typed it into you tube and came up with an episode,I hadn't remembered how scruffy Hartley Hare was.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny Wed 04-Oct-17 15:47:28

Hartley Hare was sinister!

BirthdayBetty Wed 04-Oct-17 15:47:42

I remember Pipkins, very creepy. I loved Mary, Mungo and Midge.

Sgtmajormummy Wed 04-Oct-17 15:49:42

Very camp.
A sort of Kenneth Williams puppet for kids.
But with matted fur, dodgy teeth and creepy eyes...

TheFairyCaravan Wed 04-Oct-17 15:50:31

I remember Pipkins.

I loved Mary, Mungo and Midge too.

RupertsMum2 Wed 04-Oct-17 15:52:18

I can't remember pipkins although I'm definitely quite old. My first tv memories are watch with mother. Trumpton, Camberwick green, The magic roundabout, Bill and Ben and Andy Pansy.
