AIBU?

DP thinks my new hobby (sprinting) is obnoxious.

Recently, in the spirit of health, I have decided to start running again. I'm not a fan of long distance jogging, so have opted to do sets of 100/200m sprints. The usual pavement I do my running on is about 10+m wide, so no worries there isn't a chance of me crashing into anyone.

My issue now, is that DP has told me (more than once), that what I'm doing is obnoxious and attention seeking. Confused

AIBU to think that's complete bollocks?

I wouldn't say obnoxious but it does sound annoying .

Sprinting on pavement? If so then yes that's a bit weird.

Can't you go to the park?

I guess each to their own but it does sound a bit odd! Most people do sets of sprints as part of training for longer distances.
As long as you enjoy it though go for it! It's only like HIIT training I guess.

I got shin splints running on concrete. Is there a park you could use?

And obnoxious and attention seeking? Pfft! YANBU.

It is quite odd to not be doing it somewhere away from an athletic track. But if he's calling you attention seeking I guess he's beyond trying to wind you up or poke fun and just doesn't like you. Which sounds awful for you.

I'm tempted to agree with him slightly (although maybe not to the same extreme) if you're sprinting on pavements...... sorry.

Go to a park or running track.

What's wrong with it? Carry on you're not hurting anyone!

How is it obnoxious and annoying?

It's just quite unusual, I don't think it's attention seeking. I would recommend a park near you, but if there isn't one and it really is the only location, just keep doing it if it makes you happy.

On the pavement? I think it is a bit strange but I don't know why I think that TBH!

How on earth is it obnoxious? ConfusedConfused

I’m confused.

Carry on as you were, he’s talking nonsense.

Genuinely curious question but what’s wrong with pavements as opposed to the park?

The reason I’m picking this running space is 1. It’s right outside my house and 2. It’s filled with joggers from the surrounding office buildings every evening anyway so if I were jogging nobody would bat an eyelid.

A 10m wide pavement? Confused

Who cares what people think? If you enjoy it and you aren't hurting or obstructing anyone then carry on. Your DH doesn't sound very nice.

10 meter wide pavements?! God ours are like 1m max here. I feel like a country bumpkin. As long as you're not running into people it doesn't really affect anyone else.

Your DP's description is a bit odd, but surely there is a safety issue. If pedestrians etc could veer into your path, then isn't there a good chance of a collision (unlike jogging where the lower speed gives you time to swerve or stop)?

I also would worry about damaging myself doing this on a hard pavement.

and on no account push anyone into the path of an oncoming bus...

It’s unusual and if someone started doing it outside my house I’d think it was for attention.

Park or treadmill I think

I think sprinting on pavements used by pedestrians is a bit obnoxious. And anyway, surely you'll wreck your feet?

Curtaintwitcher2017 · 04/10/2017 14:24

No idea why that would be obnoxious. Used to do that along embankment between Blackfriars and Westminster before it got destroyed by those bloody roadworks/sewer works. Early in the morning before work, when it was just me, the drunks, and other runners.

Go for it I say.

Your DH has a point.

Lycra clad sprinter or joggers are a PIA, creeping up behind you .

I do get where he is coming from, I think doing something like that over and over in one spot right outside of your house does seem like you're trying to make people notice you which can seem attention seeking.

However, if you want to do that and you're not self conscious then do it, it might be your OH is embarrassed etc.

I would listen to people when they say not to jog on concrete for health reasons though.

I'm impressed OP!

You aren't hurting anyone, you're not getting in anyones way - keep going and ignore your H and all the others who are moaning as its none of their business. Obnoxious my arse!
