My 16 year old has just told me...

... that all his friends are given £200 a week by their parents as spending money. I'm calling bullshit.

Actually, I feel like I've had the stuffing knocked out of me. I thought I was generous at about £80 a week.

So, AIBU?

£80 a week??? At 16 id be saying if you want money then earn it!!

Bullshit. Or he has very rich spoilt friends. 80 quid a week is incredibly generous (honestly would say it's on the spoiling side), tell him to get a job if he wants more money.

Erm... Are you totally loaded? Even £80 is a ridiculous amount of money every week for a teenager! Also, age 16: surely he should be getting a job and earning his own money?

You give him £80 per week? Why?

I can't imagine many people being able to give their child £200 per week - does he mix in very wealthy circles?

£80 a week!! my almost 16 year old doesn't get any pocket money from us, not that we can't afford it but want her to learn she has to work for what she gets. She has a part time job.

I'd bloody love £80 a week to spend on myself and I'm an adult who works full time!

What is that meant to cover? We're pretty well off tbh but I wouldn't expect to be giving that kind of cash (£80 or £200) to a teen living at home just for fun?

£80! I was given £20 a MONTH if I’d been judged to have done enough around the house to warrant it. When I was 15 I went out and got my first job and have worked ever since. At 16 he should’ve out earning the £200 per week!

My about to be 15yo gets £45 per month plus sch lunches paid for (usually about another £50). That's quite a lot in my view and we are not badly off.

£80 a week?????? Are you actually kidding!!! Mine gets £20 and does jobs. If they do then it's no wonder at all that we have so many entitled little shits in the country!

God I wish someone gave me £80 a week. I never received pocket money at all and started working at 14, every weekend.

What is he spending 80 quid a week on?

That's 10 grand a year. I'm also calling bullshit. £80 a week is also an incredible amount. My daughter got about £20 a week and her mobile paid for... I also got her a job in the hotel I ran doing breakfast shifts at the weekend.

A grand a month?? For each child (if they have more than one) Bullshit! I don't have a grand a month spending money between me and DP both working full time and no DC yet.
£80 a week is more than generous of you!

Really?? You happily hand over £80 now to a 16 year old and genuinely want to know if that's ok because his mates get £200. Ok then.

What does a sixteen year old living at home spend £80 a week on? No car to fill, I assume most food is school lunch or at home, no bills to pay....

Report
Cracklesfire · 04/10/2017 11:35

DH and I were trying to curb our needless spending recently and started living on £25 a week walking around money. What the hell does your kid spend £320 a month on? That's crazy!
