Chocolate croissant-gate

I went to a bakery this morning to buy a chocolate croissant for my son, ahead of me was a mum and a little boy (6ish). He was messing about a bit and taking ages saying what he wanted so she waved me in front so I didn't have to wait.

I then asked for a chocolate croissant - the last one on the shelf - and the mum said 'oh you can't have that, what if my son decides he wants it'. What would you have said/done?

I'd have asked the child if he wants it. If he didn't answer quick enough I'd have said you are talking too long and ordered it for myself.

I would of said “Well I’ve chosen for it and paid for it now, so if your ds ever decides what he wants he will need to pick something else” and then continued with my day.

How is it your problem her child may or may not decide he wanted the last croissant? Let’s face it you get a lot of disappointment in life he might as well get use to it.

I'd have looked at her blankly and then repeated my order for the chocolate croissant and then said to her "life doesn't work that way."

Honestly I was all ready with a reply along the lines of 'tough luck' but before I said anything the baker pointed out a whole tray of chocolate croissants that had just come out of the oven - so enough for everyone. I was surprised though, I would never have the nerve/cheek to ask someone not to buy something in case my kid wanted it.

I’d have probably let them have it but I am a bit of a wimp.

We were somewhere recently and the lady in front asked for the last pain au chocolat, which my 3yo has had her eye on. My daughter just went “oh, I wanted that” pretty quietly, and I pointed out that the lady in front had been there first and chosen it, and she was entirely fine with that explanation. If she can understand that, surely a 6yo can

I'd have asked the baker if there were more (as it turns out there were) and if not I'd have said maybe our DC could share the last one if they both wanted it.
