AIBU?

Awkward flight-who was being unreasonable?

Short flight home yesterday (4 hours), was seated next to a women (Lady A) and behind us was Lady B. About 45 minuets into the flight the women (Lady A) next to me apologised and said she thinks she's having a sudden IBS flare up and asked to swap seats so she could be a bit closer to the toilet. Lady A letting off a quite a lot of wind.Whilst not the most pleasent situation for everyone around her she was clearly embarrassed and kept walking about/going to the toilet.

Women B behind us kept commenting on the smell and ended up opening and using some sort of essential oils (lavender Iavender I think). she was wafting the oils about regularly (not putting a bit on a tissue or something and holding it close) and right behind me. I ended up with a headache due to the smells so asked if she could put it away for a bit. She refused and said the flatulance smell was to strong and I shouldn't have swapped seats with lady A (don't think it would have made much difference either way, except I would of have to get up and down regularly to let the women A out). Another person also asked her to stop using the oils as the smell was making them feel sick. Again lady B refused and got quite grumpy with lady A saying she should fly if she was sick, she's inconsidering and being was quite rude. Flight attendeant ended up intervening but the flight was full so no one could move seats (and we only had an hour left by that point).

So who WBU? Lady A, Lady B or me? I feel like the ibs flare up wasn't really something lady B could control but can also appreciate the smell wasn't pleasent. But neither was the oils and I would have rather smelt the flatulance than those to be honest. Sorry it's a bit long but it's been grating on me.

Lady b was unreasonable.

While I appreciate that the smells from lady a were unpleasant, it was beyond her control and was because of illness.

I think B was unreasonable. Like you said, she could have put a bit on a tissue and held it to her nose. It's not like A could control it and by asking to swap seats she did the best she could in a bad situation.

I feel really sorry for the lady with IBS. Sounds like she handled things as gracefully as she could, and it was unpleasant of the other woman to call attention to the problem.

I think actually you for calling attention to the lavender smell. It was obvious why Lady B was doing it and I can't imagine how awful Lady A felt when a conversation about the smell started up. You should have left it.

Poor Lady A, she was doing her best.

Lady B was extraordinarily rude.

That wouldn't have happened with British Airways

AS IBS is known to be exacerbated by stress..I am sure lavender woman made everything much worse.

I would say lady b. I don't like the smell of lavender plus I seem to fart a lot when I'm flying

Lady B was very unfair. Lady A cant help her IBS and you were kind swapping with her and it was better that lady was able to get to toilet quickly. I cant stand certain perfume or essentual oil as they give me migraines so hate when people waft them about. People said it was bothering them so she was rude to waft about. She should have just put a bit on tissue rather than subjecting everyone else to smell of oil.

By the way thanks to OP's username I'm now imagining a mingled smell of bombay potatoes, fart, and lavender. Grin

Agreed. Lady B was very rude.

My sympathies are all with Lady A and I think you were very nice to be accommodating OP. Many people wouldn't.

Farts wouldn't have given me a sore head.
But the essential oils would have.
Some people are selfish plain and simple.
I reckon she must fall out with a lot of people which is pretty sad really.

I remember having this horrible woman behind us on a flight before.
She had a go at my 2 year old for jumping back on her seat. I was just about to tell her to stop when she had a go.
Later realised she had her head against DD's seat reading!!!!!!
My poor DD. I did very clearly tell her it was Ok she had done absolutely nothing wrong and how well behaved she was being.

Essential oils trigger migraines for me and Funnily enough I to didn't feel up to dealing with one of those as well as juggling 3dc.
