AIBU to think this man's comment was unnecessary and rude.

Having a Sunday afternoon stroll by the river locally and passed a man then drew level with two women with a couple of dogs. One of the women turned and started to say something to me then called back to the man laughing saying she thought I was him. He shouted back 'Good lord no, I am better looking than that'. I stopped, turned round and glared at him and said to watch it as I might feel tempted to push him in the river. Why are some men so pitiful?

NancyDonahue Sun 24-Sep-17 18:15:06

Was he just joking?

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone Sun 24-Sep-17 18:16:09

Sounds like a badly thought out joke

AmberStClare Sun 24-Sep-17 18:16:28

Not sure, a twat I suspect. The women both looked very embarrassed.

Threenme Sun 24-Sep-17 18:18:45

I doubt he was serious op!

BackieJerkhart Sun 24-Sep-17 18:19:13

HEs a knob for sure. You don't say a think like that to a stranger! Different if it's your friend and you can have a joke but not a stranger.

He sounds like he was making a silly joke (possibly even being sarcastically self deprecating).

You sound as if your response was incredibly aggressive and disproportionate.

The only way this would be acceptable is if you're gorgeous and he clearly isn't, so he was joking. Take it that way!

splendidisolation Sun 24-Sep-17 18:22:04

Depends. Are you gorgeous?

CherryChasingDotMuncher Sun 24-Sep-17 18:23:41

I agree he’s a knob. People who go out their way to publicly embarrass others are knobs

AmberStClare Sun 24-Sep-17 18:24:04

Lemons, so you would laugh a tinkly laugh would you as such a comment?

As I am 5'9'' and blonde and he was 5' and bald assume was a joke. Debatable if I looked gorgeous as my hair needs a wash!

Needalifeoverhaul Sun 24-Sep-17 18:25:21

It was just a joke op. My dad's sense of humour is just the same! I wouldn't give it another thought.

Fekko Sun 24-Sep-17 18:27:20

Just a joke - especially if you are obviously more attractive than him!

silverbell64 Sun 24-Sep-17 18:27:27

It was a joke wasn't it. I'd not be so offended at all.

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge Sun 24-Sep-17 18:28:08

It was a joke OP, chill out.

lemonsandlimes123 Sun 24-Sep-17 18:28:25

Well given the extra info you have now given, it was clearly a joke at his expense not yours! So yes i would probably smile.

Not sure what your random tinkly laugh comment is about, I assume you are now trying to have a go at me as well as the man!

MrsMHasIt Sun 24-Sep-17 18:28:38

I think he made a poorly thought out joke and I doubt he meant to hurt your feelings. I think your response was unreasonable, but also spare of the moment forgivable.

I once said 'hey sexy' in a joking way to a totally inappropriate recipient. As soon as I opened my mouth I wanted to die. It was horrible!

lemonsandlimes123 Sun 24-Sep-17 18:29:30

The women were probably nervous at your aggressive and threatening response!

FannyWisdom Sun 24-Sep-17 18:29:40

Fucks sake.

BackieJerkhart Sun 24-Sep-17 18:30:21

Ugh is this one of those crap attempts at flirting? Like when boys pull a girl's pigtails and gets told "it's just 'cause he likes you"?

Beeziekn33ze Sun 24-Sep-17 18:30:59

Just a silly joke. Surprised you didn't just laugh back saying 'in your dreams!' or similar.
No wonder the women looked embarrassed.

Wilburissomepig Sun 24-Sep-17 18:34:25

Sounds like it was a joke, if not a very funny one.

You do sound as though you've taken it very seriously though, OP.

Bluntness100 Sun 24-Sep-17 18:34:51

I also think he was making a joke at his own expense.

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox Sun 24-Sep-17 18:35:09

As I am 5'9'' and blonde and he was 5' and bald assume was a joke.

PerfumeIsAMessage Sun 24-Sep-17 18:38:14

Like you said was a joke.

It must be exhausting for people on MN at the moment to be so constantly offended at everything.
